Well I've just poisoned all the chickens

Recommended Posts

and I mean it too. What with everything that's been going on over the last week the fruit I had soaking for Christmas cakes and puddings has just been sitting there festering. Some was soaked in brandy and some in orange juice (mother's tee total) So realising that realistically the cakes etc weren't going to get made I took the fruit down the compost and en route threw some to the hens. Sadly I realised that I've thrown them the stuff soaked in brandy. Obviously I legged it back to the house to get a broom and very very quickly swept it all up, but they'd all consumed some, including the chicks. Not much I can do now except wait and see what the morning brings. I've had a really pants week, I felt fine last week but today I'm tired, emotional and sad, having been overwhelmed with guilt at the plight of soon-to-be-ex OH (god knows why, it's not my fault ) I'm now consumed with guilt over the hens. Keep your fingers crossed, I've a nast feeling I won't be waking up to the same number I went to sleep with.

I think the hens will just sleep very well. If they got up the ladder, they can't be that drunk. And they have cast-iron stomachs.

Hens in orchards often eat windfalls that are turning into cider.

I just did a Google search for "drunk hens", but got some strange results....

Oh Mrs B, I feel for you. You sound under a lot of stress at the moment and life always feels worse when everything happens at once.

I know its easy to say but please try to be kind to yourself. Hoping tomorrow will seem more positive and your girls wake up fit and well.

Big Hugs xx

Have'nt been on the forum for absolutely ages and ages and thought I'd 'pop in' to see how everyone was doing - and your post caught my eye Mrs B. :(

So sorry to hear you're feeling so sad and things are getting you down. Shame we're not neighbours, sounds like we could do with sharing a stiff brandy, never mind the girls!

I'm sure they'll be fine in the morning - eggs might be interesting though

A hug goes out to you!

Oh dear :( I'm sure that a lot of the brandy will have evaporated off if they have been soaking for a while :?

Thanks guys, as for the above, that's about my only consolation, the fruit had been there for just about a week, and the only reason I gave it to them was because I sniffed it to make sure it was the OJ soaked stuff and couldn't smell anything at all. So I chucked it all in, then went to put the OTHER stuff on the compost and realised I couldn't smell that EITHER. :? So I tasted a bit of it :vom: and realised that I still had the OJ stuff and that they had the brandy stuff. GOD :x I'm so cross with myself. Still, whatever happens it was a genuine mistake and I got it all out within a minute or two, mind you they were there normal vulture-like selves, my main concern is the chicks. They're barely 5 weeks old, God, drunken 5 week old chicks, doesn't bear thinking about.
