My housing manager has just telephoned to say Im not going to be allowed to keep chickens in my garden.

There goes my dream of owning chickens...............

Im absolutely gutted!

My tenancy agreement says I can keep them provided they are small and unable to escape.

Shes just being awkward.

Oh well, Sorry, just feel like pooh now

Oh I am so sorry to hear that, what a meanie.

Well, maybe not for the time being, but you now have time to plan and learn. Perhaps even get your fix by going on courses every now and again. Maybe there is someone in your area that would appreciate some help looking after theirs when they go on hols.

Don't give up the dream, it'll happen one day.

Why not sponsor BHWT hen in the meantime? And maybe the bribe of fresh eggs could win her round? :boohoo:

Sorry to hear that.

I can imagine she has a different idea of what keeping chickens means to what you do. My husband and I certainly had very different mental pictures, and that's why he was so anti.

Is there anyone near you who keeps chickens in an Eglu? If so, perhaps you could take your housing manager round to meet them, to show that they aren't a nightmare?

Shouldnt you be having your baby? :eh:

:( Best of luck with your quest. Its bad enough having to persuade husbands to have chickens. :D

Plum????????

I dont know what baby you are talking about........unless you know something I dont!:shock::shock:

It looks like it might all come down to terminology as it would appear that 'birds' are allowed, but i'll bet my bottom dollar they tell me....'Ah yes but Chickens are not birds they are termed 'Poultry' and as such are not allowed...........

Unfortunately the term'Poultry' is nowhere to be found in the tenancy agreement, so I reckon I may have a loophole here.....lets hope.

Just a thought..

Where abouts are you as I'm sure someone would love the "help" holiday or otherwise thats already been mentioned..

It may just tide you over until you are in a better position to overide her?

I know I'd be more than happy to house a hen or two for you or to come and cuddle my lot

UPDATE:

Have just got the dreaded letter from the housing manager, so here it is complete with bad spelling etc:

Re:Permission to own two chickens in your garden

Thank you for your letter dated 18th November 2008 regarding the above.

I am writing to let you know we are unable to grant you permission to keep chickens in your back garden because of the associated health and safety issues.

Chickens can be messy, they deep holes in the garden, they attract rats, vermin and this constitute health and safety hazards.

How can I take this woman seriously??? ..haha, she is clearly insane  .....at least my sense of humour has returned!

I'd go over her head if I were you

I'd argue that ANY pet CAN be messy but a responsible owner would make sure they cleaned up after their animals and you ARE responsible. Two chickens, especially bantams, aren't going to make a lot of mess at all!

I have 8 chickens, does my garden look a mess to you? ;) Show her my photo and tell her you only want to keep two chooks and if there's still a problem, go above her!!!!!

we take the food in at night and brush up and we haven't seen any vermin since we've had the girls (hope that's not tempting fate!)

If you have a decent sized run, you need never let them out and if they dig holes, you just fill them in! Surely you're allowed to dig holes in your garden!?

Chickens themselves do not attract rats and vermin. It's the food that attracts them - as does food put out for wild birds; hedgehogs etc. Are they also saying that tennants should not feed the wild birds? If their food is brought in at night, there is nothing to attract them.

Silly woman, why is it that people who know nothing about this subject insist on coming out with spiel like she did, does she think youre going to leave them to flap about in your garden untended?! Maybe she's seen hens driving JCBs, hence the 'large holes' comment.:wall: (just finished nights, so short fused!!)

it's actually called being prejudiced! Making a judgement about something or someone without being armed with the facts is prejudice.
