Chook n Boo Mum
Can somebody tell me, what is the current recommended treatment for tonsillitis? At least I think that's what the whopping great blister on DD's throat is Have given calpol & kept her home today -she only went back yesterday - and fed her soft food. We all seem to get the blisters after/during a nasty cold, which she had during the holiday & I normally treat with salt water & painkillers, although the blister nearest her tongue is HUGE this time, similar size to my little fingernail! I can't remember is is contagious, or do we keep them home for their own comfort? When she's had calpol, she's at best normal, at worst hyper, just like the advert of a couple of years back Sha x
chelsea
I think the only way to get rid is antibiotics isnt it? I had one of the "cillins" when I had tonsillitis. I hope she gets better soon, when I had it I felt absolutely dreadful.
Egluntyne
My daughter (aged 27) gets tonsillitis 2 or 3 times a year. I'm sure she is given Penicillin V.
abwsco
I always use about 5 drops of tea tree oil in a small glass or warm water and gargle with that about every hour. We've only needed one lot of antibiotics for a long time by doing this. Stroppy teenager DD refused to do it last time she had a bad throat so that's why it didn't work. Chook n Boo Mum
I think the recommendations change from time to time re the use of penicillin. I'm allergic to the stuff so can't take it anyway. She is totally hyper on Calpol at the mo, the neighbours must be wondering what on earth we are doing - we are playing a game of Cluedo in the style of the Pink Panther's Inspector Clueso complete with the dreadful Steve Martin accent She's not impressed with the sound of tea tree gargling Sha x

I don't blame her - my MIL suggested this to me as hubby and I always used to get tonsillitis. I tried it once and threw up - I can't stand the smell of it now although I do know it has great healing properties. We usually sit it out in this house just with painkillers as our doctors don't like giving antibiotics out so I don't usually bother going now. I even pleaded with her once as I went down with it 4 days before we were going to Scotland for a wedding but she wasn't having it Hope your daughter feels better soon. The Dogmother
They still recommend ant-b's. I had it as a child and then again when R was small and brought the bugs home - my tonsils were so scarred that they were going to take them out. Thankfully, the infections stopped - it really is debilitating. May I suggest that you get the little 'un to the GP?
Willow
I'd echo the advice to get the doctors to check in case antibiotoics are needed also add salt water gargle, especially tonight before you can get to the doctor ! Make sure she doesn't swallow obviously but salt water gargles are very good for throat problems.
chickencam
I was very much the same Claret. It is horrible and the only way to treat it is with antibiotics and paracetamol. Pretty much the only antibiotics that I have taken in my life have been for tonsilitis.
Chook n Boo Mum
She's gargled with salt water before bed & taken some more calpol. I'll check her throat again in the morning & decide whether to get her to the doc, I know one time I took DS to get antibiotics for the same thing, I was told they weren't prescribing them for tonsillitis as it would get better on its own. Maybe a crack of dawn phone call is needed Thanks for your thoughts and good wishes, you are a lovely lot you know Sha x
fowlbird
what ever treatment you end up giving her should be accompanied by jelly and i scream
ClaireG
Poor her tonsillites is rotten. I used to suffer really badly until i had my tonsils out when i was 9. I know my Drs still give anti biotics as one of Adams friends had tonsillites before christmis and was given amoxicillian.
Christian
I get it twice a year when run down and antib's are the only thing that shift it. Amoxicillan (sp) works work Jelly and I scream is compulsory Hope she is better soon.

There's usually no problem with her doing it but she was just being a mega hormonal teenager Also didn't tell me that her throat was worse until it was absolutley covered in spots and the young doctor went OMG and leapt away when he saw it! Hope your DD feels better soon Sha.
Snowy
Ugh, poor little mite I still get tonsilitis once a year, and it is straight to the docs for the antibiotics. It is about the only time I ever go to the GP, and I am very anti the overprescribing of antibiotics. But this is one thing that does need them. Hope she feels better soon
Seagazer
My daughter eventually had hers out when she was 12. She kept getting it a couple of times a year and missing a lot of school. She ended up with her throat nearly closing up and was very close to being admitted to hospital (can't think of the name of it - a particular name for the condition - old age creeping up ). Our doctor didn't want her to have them out (honestly I think she just likes us to suffer) but we had it done privately in the end. The surgeon said they were very badly scarred and she should have had them out ages before.
Tiggy
it is penicillin v, or erythromycin if you are allergic,
Chook n Boo Mum
No idea to be honest ! I know I went into a kind of zombie world when I was given penicillin (I think) having fallen over at work in the carpark (No I wasn't inebriated, it was 7.15 am & I tripped on my overly long skirt getting out of the car !) & grazed my hand badly & it started to go septic. Not nice & I don't ever want to repeat it. DD is perkier this morning & not on calpol so not hyper due to that! Her throat is still sore and blistery, so I'll go to the pharmacist to get advice when we go out for some vital supplies like milk!! As she's happier today I wouldn't worry about going out if we hadn't run out, simply carry on with the salt gargles & painkillers as needed!! chelsea
it is penicillin v, or erythromycin if you are allergic, I take both these for my cellulitus, and both work very well at shifting it. The erythromycin can give a dodgy tum sometimes though. If you get one of the above wildmum, should soon clear it up. Hope she's better soon. ..lay a little egg for me
I thought that most cases of tonsillitis were viral and so not helped by anti-b's...am I wrong? In fact, DS currently has very sore throat, with enlarged tonsils and I am just treating him with calpol and rest...how long should I wait before a trip to the GP? He doesn't have a temp or any other symptoms; from what I could see, his throat did not look all that red, but I could see his tonsils peeking out and looking as if they are covered in white streaks...advice please? That was my feeling too and your DS sounds similar to my DD. I'll let you know what the pharmacist says later! We are coated & booted ready to go - well I am !! I wanted to go earlier, but she chose to have a long Lush bath, so we've waited until she warmed up again before venturing out..... Mrs Webmuppet
I had my tonsils out a very long time ago when it was 'trendy' to remove them.........now I just get the horrendous sore throat instead Little Miss Webmuppet has avoided the curse of tonsilitis so far ( touches wood). She just get's horrendous coughs instead.

We are back...and have been some time actually, sorry I couldn't get on here this afternoon to post what the pharm man said. Essentially treat as we have been, calpol/ibuprofen, rest & if no better in 5 days go to the doctor. Ibuprofen will reduce any swelling in the throat as it's anti-inflammatory. I've also been getting her to gargle with salted water, which she's really not impressed with, but with the option of salt water or teatree she went with the salt! I had a look in her throat before bed & it looks heaps better tonight . She'll be off her clubs tomorrow as she started to flag whilst doing the snatch & grab raid we did after getting our advice, but should be better for school on Monday. Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts and advice, it's great to feel you have a friend (or 5000 ) on the other side of the keyboard, you are never alone!
