storage boxes for chickens food

Recommended Posts

I keep sacks in the shed and then have a couple of weeks supply in a lidded metal bucket (from flyte so fancy on web) in the field, which is kept (with my other bits and pieces) in a plastic store thing which I also bought on the web, which is described as a balcony storage box and is therefore not too huge but has a hinged and fitting lid. Jolly easy to put together too.

Seems to work ok so far. You need something secure from rats basically, and dry, and not too far away from the chickens as you may have to top stuff up at 6 in the morning in the dark

I have their feed sacks in our 'shed' (a lean to built on the side of the house. Trouble is water is starting to go under the door, and although not reached it yet, I wouldn't want to risk it. And the paper sack the corn is in is feeling a bit damp and I think may start growing if the weather gets warmer

Yes, I have had the pleasures of the early morning feeds with them as I've had the girls since the end of October :D

I shall have a look for the balcony storage boxes.

I use cereal containers, the pour out type, for the mixed up stuff (added garlic powder, bokashi and limestone flour), so it's easy for the children & DH should they choose to feed the chooks, the rest of the bag/sack goes into a plastic dustbin. I keep all my goodies indoors, so have no rodent attacks - keeping marauding labradors out is a problem sometimes though  !!

When I leave food etc out for the neighbours to serve, I have an ex-Army cooking pot with a fairly tight fitting lid which lives outside the back door & I put the required amount of food etc into whichever plastic containers fit in it! The chooks use it as a step to see further into the house....

We always bring our food bowls etc indoors overnight to reduce the temptation for vermin, so we fill up the grub & mash bowls indoors & take it out ready to serve.

Hope this helps!

The sack is in a metal dustbin, then the ready mixed feed goes in a white bucket and lid i got from the fishing tackle shop near me where my friend works (food quality), brill size and that goes on top of sack in bin. Its all outside next to run. If you can get to a tackle shop they will probably give you one.

I use these to store pellets, corn and mash in my shed. They don't take up much room and are stackable without you having to lift off the top ones to get to the bottom ones. As they have rounded corners they are pretty vermin proof (Although my mums one had a little mousey intruder where it nibbled around the hinge part, so we've fixed that by putting chicken wire over the hinge bit)

I have one of each white/cream bins the larger for feed and the small for odd bits and bobs..

Oh and i have a bungee through the handles so no one apart from me can get in!

Very good! And soo glad i saw them on my way round!

I can't get the link to work for Stoice's containers :(

I use a plastic dustbin (from a hardware shop) with metal clips, it just exactly holds a sack of pellets. Garlic, limestone etc are in their own plastic containers anyway, and then I mix up feed in a plastic sweetie jar, I think it held Roses chocolates but you know the kind of thing.

I have several of these that I use for both the girls stuff and also my wild bird feed. They stack which is useful and the lids are very secure. My local horsey feed store also sell something similar which I think were about £6.

smaller versions of these are what i get free from tackle shop
