 Arg......... I am at work........... OH is currently at home ........... having waited in for delivery of new sofa from Ikea.......... It doesn't fit through the living room door :shock::lol::shock: We had already shifted the old one out (its upended in the kitchen) because its due to be collected by freecyclers this afternoon. So now, we have 2 sofas upended in the kitchen and none in the living room  Oh yes, and we have 8 people coming for dinner on Friday evening :lol:

a neighbour had a delivery of a rather beautiful antique wardrobe which wouldn't go past the turn of the stairs so it's now in the hall awaiting the return of her husband who won't be back until February at the earliest...

Taking off the hinges is about the only option you have, HENthusiastic  ...or knocking a hole through the wall.

We're having a loft conversion done and I know the stairs to it will be narrower and more winding than the ones we have now and we're going to have to get a bed or something up there...

((((big strong men)))) <--- anyone got any to lend me?

They took my door off the hinges to the sitting room and they had a cover for the settee like a duvet which took the squashing and did not damage the sofa - they said they could not bring it in the patio but it would have been easier and its a huge 3 seater leather one - the 2 seater came in ok.

Try covering the sofa with something soft like a blanket to protect it too. Oh and they took off the feet as well!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oops. You'll have to take the window out. :D

perhaps the builders will let us take the big stuff through the hole in the roof before they put the window in the dormer :D

mind you... how easy is it to get stuff up the scaffolding?

HENthusiastic, maybe the freecyclers will have some ideas?

Oh and they took off the feet as well!!!!!!!!!!!!

that'll save a couple of inches :D

hi guys,

Thanks for all the suggestions. The delivery men have left. OH's dad has come to help ..... OH and Dad have agreed IT AINT GONNA FIT! I think I'd rather send the thing back than go to the hassle and expense of taking windows out. I passed on your suggestions, but they don't think its going to happen.

Ive texted, emailed and phoned the freecyclers but so far no response.... I hope they get the message in time. I feel awful for letting them down.

Ive spoken to Ikea and they will do a full refund but wont pick it up until next week, so we just have to plan how to have 8 people over for a meal (its a murder mystery evening) when we can't get in the kitchen for sofas!

Ah well, tiss only money and inconvienience. "Ooops, word censored!"ody's hurt :D

Well I phoned a window man who lives local. He said he could do it for £80. I said  yes please; he can come over at 4pm. Phoned OH, who did a u turn and went back home to wait for window man. Then OH phoned to check that Id said they were bay windows  phoned the man back...... he thought I had meant just to take the sheet of glass back and then re-seal it  Hes coming over at 4pm anyway to look at it...... But I think it would mean taking out the whole window frames and that has got to be expensive.

Mean time I have been contacting the freecycles and cancelling....... re-arranging......... cancelling

This is actually getting less funny and more stressy AND when window man's gone, we have to drive over to Leeds to go visit OH's grandad who is in hospital and probably not got long left

I must remember what I put in my first post "no-body's hurt. Its only money and inconvienience". We can cope with that :?

oh what a nightmare

When we moved in here none of the furniture would go up the stairs (very narrow with a turn) so it had to go up onto the garage roof and in through a very handy large window that opened up completely (think the previous occupants may have had to put it in!).

But we did have a moment of "what are we going to do??!!).

Good luck.

Hope you get sorted. We had a problem getting a three seater settee into our front room. Called the double glazing company who we had had work done with and they were going to charge a fortune. Luckily, one of the delivery men who just happened to be the father of a girl I had in my class years ago noticed that my lovely leather settee had damage to it and told me not to sign for it.

The furniture company called me later that day and asked if I wanted a refund so I just ordered a two seater instead.

We are in the window trade & have popped windows out for people in situations like this more than once 8)

When we first moved here the cottage had a tiny narrow winding staircase & our divan double bed wouldn't fit up it, so we had to take the entire staircase out & had a step ladder there to get upstairs for months

:lol::lol: Sorry Dear, but got to laugh as I have had similar problems. My Victorian house has narrow doorways and even narrower stairs (just ask Egluntine), I now take care to measure everything first.

Several neighbours have had to have their windows popped out to get big pieces for furniture in. Thing is, if they can't get them through the door, they are probably too big for the rooms :?

Thanks guys, good to hear so many of you have had similar experiences! :D Well window men turned up and were very lovely chappies. We have a bay window, so it means actually popping out two whole units (not just the glass). The good thing is that they can do it on Friday afternoon (Im off work then). Otherwise, even if we sent the sofa back, it would mean one of us having to take ANOTHER day off work. So we have decided to go for it...... its going to cost £140 plus two bacon and egg butties! Expensive, but low on hassle.

Cinnamon; does that sound okay to you.... to actually take out the whole double glazed bay window units???

(We are going to visit K's grandad tomorow evening now... both too frazzled)

Its been nice to have the omletteers alongside us. Thanks.

:D

When Him Indoors and I bought our first house, my dear old Dad took one look at the dogleg staircase and said 'you'll have trouble getting a coffin down those....you'll have to take the window out'.

Just what you want to hear when you are in your 20's and in the first flush of it all. :D

I've borne it in mind ever since when it has come to shifting heavy things either into or out of a house.

Am glad you have got it all under control. :D

:lol::lol::lol: Hilarious!

My ex used to work for Pickfords in the hols when he was a student, so he's pretty nifty at getting things through small gaps and round corners.
