Sad News - Any advice ?

Recommended Posts

Came howm from work this afternoon and let the (BHWT) girls out as usual to free range, only to she madeleine with what can be described 'as her inside's out of her bottom). the other girls knew something was up, so I immediately got the vets box and took her there. The vet said that they nothing that could be done and these things sometimes happen.

The best thing for her was done, and hopefully the 5 weeks of freedom she has had and the love that she has given and was given will help her on her way.

The worse part is I have to tell the children and not sure how they will take it !

My question is, does this happen alot ? I was too upset to ask the vet, so asking for you advice.

The other 5 girls seem to be getting on with life as normal, Madeleines best buddy Doris does seem a little quiet though.

Thanks for listening

Andy

Hi Andy. So sorry to hear your sad news. Hen's do occasionally prolapse. Some Omleteers have pushed it back and it's stayed there ok, others have had good results with hemarroid cream.

At least you got an honest decision from a vet and the right thing was done. Ex-batts have worked hard making eggs and sometimes their bits do suffer for it. At least she got to taste freedom before she passed away.

I can relate to this so well...we lost our girl this week. Not from a prolapse but something rare...a type of pica in birds that makes them eat large and fatal quantities of dirt. Very rare and very unforeseeable. Prolapses do happen in birds and sometimes they can be sorted out. It was sad that in this case, it could not. It will be tough telling the children but I think a lot of people here suggesting something positive....planting bulbs or a little 'shrine' in the garden....where they can express their affection.

Hugs and understanding. All of us here do not have 'just chickens.' They are beloved pets...
