They've had loads to eat and drink, have suitably trashed their crate and are now settling down to spend the night in the conservatory. I'll set up the spare eglu in the morning and dash to the suppliers for some more hemcore for the run :D :D :D

Where did you do the rescue?

 

We got our 3 ex batts today, we have named them Scraggy (because she is very scraggy) Madge and Beaky, I am a bit worried about Beaky though her beak is a bit deformed and crosses over, do you think she will be ok?

 

I can't wait to see your before and after pics and they are quite oven ready poor girlies.

awwww, Pam, if anyone can bring them back to the picture of health it's you! So brave of you to help out too, don't think I'd be emotionally tough enough to handle seeing a battery farm :? Good on you! :clap: xxxx

I have just shown those pictures to my husband, who was horrified at their condition at the moment. Looking forward to seeing pictures of them later on, when they are better. Good for you, for rescuing them!

 

Were all the chickens in that sorry state, or were they the worst ones?

It was the West Sussex rescue, near Chichester :D :D ...... I'm assuming that you were at one local to you

 

I am a bit worried about Beaky though her beak is a bit deformed and crosses over, do you think she will be ok?

 

 

Should be OK... just keep an eye on her and make sure she's eating OK :D

Thank you Poet :oops::oops: I felt the time had come for a few more rescue girls after I sadly lost my darling Clarrie earlier this year - she had had 2 years with me so was a free chook longer than a Battery chook :D :D :D

Seeing the new battery girls always produces a not so little lump in my throat. Welcome home girls.

 

We had one poor lady who came to collect today, in tears at the state of the girls :cry::cry:

These were the absolute worst.......but I have to say the others weren't alot better :(:(

I grew up in Selsey and went to school in Chichester, but would never have imagined that there were battery farms so near. How awful! How did you come to be helping?

 

I found out about the BHWT a few months after my first girls arrived back in 2005, and in 2006 I contacted my local coordinator to see if she could do with anymore volunteers.....as it happened yes she did as it was only her, her mum and one other at the time. I help at rescues as often as I can and sometimes my DD comes along aswell :D

 

I always end the rescue days absolutely shattered but it's a lovely sort of shattered :D

What lucky little girls :D - and don't they just look like they're going to be in mischief very soon!

I wouldn't be emotionally stable enough to go on a rescue - I'd be the one sat in the van all in bits :cry: - but all those ex-batts now in good homes are very grateful to all of you that do this (including my six little monsters). Well done to all at BHWT! :clap:

Yes we went to a rescue in Coventry, it was lovely seeing so many caring people taking the girls and giving them better lives :) I would love to get involved with the rescues but I know I would get too attached and end up bringing some home, hubby would kill me!

 

Beaky can eat the ex batt crumb and is drinking, I did notice she makes a funny noise after she had finished, had our first blood shed though, Madge has been pecking at the combs of Scraggy and Beaky and there was a little bit of blood on them both, I have some purple spray stuff so will see how they are in the morning and might have to pop some on.

 

Oh, and the lady at your rescue wasn't the only one who cried, I was before we even saw them all, I'm so emotional hehe!!!!

Just a quick update - they are all up and eating quicker than I can refill the feeders :D :D

 

Off to the feed suppliers in a mo to get some more provisions and a trough feeder :D:D I think they may have a few more days in the conservatory though as Miriam was sounding a bit wheezy this morning and Ethel was visibly shivering :? And it will give us all the chance to get to know each other better and for me to keep a really close eye on them as I'm at home for the next few days :D :D :D I will rig up a slightly bigger set up for them later ........ although I'm sure they are eyeing up the cat basket in front of the stove :wink::lol::lol:
