They said on the news that it seems to affect young people more due to not having built up their immune system enough. It seems the 45's and over are more resilient this time. OH whooped to hear that! Still it is a concern, but if your number is up, then so be it. They seem to be more on the ball with this outbreak and apparently if you are diagnosed in time and get the proper care and treatment, it is a hopeful cure - unlike the avian one that has been promised time and again. Yet we are well overdue. Sometimes it's good to live on an island.

I just had the alert from the WHO land on my desk fairly straight forward really, if you have been to Mexicao, San Antonio, Texas, San Diago Imperial county or New York City and develop flu like symptoms you will need a nose & throat swab and antivirals, you can be managed at home just like ordinary flu unless really unwell. My Docs here are fairly nonplussed, normal flu kills elderly/weak or v ill people all the time and the pig flu seems to do the same. We haven't had a flu pandemic since 1800s & that killed more than the 1st world war, but back then we did not have antivirals or the level of nutritian tha twe have now, this is going to be more of a problem in poorer countries. Normal advise wash hands frequently use paper hankies and dispose of them after each use,

Like Tiggy I work in Docs - not had my blurb yet. When bird flu was in the news one recp got so fed up of being asked re symptons of bird flu she threatened to tell the next person that if they started clucking and scratching in the dust and felt the urge to "push" they should be worried!! I was not around to see this. No doubt after a week of worried well asking re symptons she'll tell em that if they start oinking and grow a curly tail to worry.

oh dear we have had out breaks of men c, scarlet fever, measles to deal with in the last week so maybe everyone has had enough just at the moment.

The Director-General has raised the level of influenza pandemic alert from the current phase 3 to phase 4.

 

The change to a higher phase of pandemic alert indicates that the likelihood of a pandemic has increased, but not that a pandemic is inevitable.

 

As further information becomes available, WHO may decide to either revert to phase 3 or raise the level of alert to another phase.

 

This decision was based primarily on epidemiological data demonstrating human-to-human transmission and the ability of the virus to cause community-level outbreaks.

absolutely right luckily people seem to be doing exactly that, if you are unwell

STAY AT HOME keep your bugs to yourself as with any strain of flu virus it is the weak & vulnerable amongst us that need to worry. Take care everyone, I do hope that this all fizzels out before I fly to cuba in a few weeks I'm really looking forward to a wellearned holiday

It must be worrying if you're in Mexico, but I would have thought Mexico has bigger problems too, and ones which don't get reported on so much.

Quite. Never mind the millions that die from malaria, the hundreds if not thousands that die on Britains roads every year. Are we banning cars? Is it on the front page - "another 250 children in the third world died 3 minutes ago from malaria?" No it isn't. It's yet ANOTHER media driven hype designed to strike fear into the masses to take everyones mind of the appalling economic situation, so that then when the government issue you with a facemask (probably made by some poor 8 year old Chinese child in a sweatshop for 50p a day) and puts a leaflet through your door we can all feel reassured that we live in the west and have such a caring government. NOT.

Sorry, very cynical today. I have no doubt that were I living in Mexico I would be worried, the same as if I was living ANYWHERE other than here and was living in poverty I would also be terrified of malaria, or HIV, or cholera, or dysentry. Normal behaviour in the west along with good hygene and being sensible should keep most people safe IF it starts to spread.
