This may seem an odd and rather personal question, but our local BBC radio station read out a news piece about this and created quite a storm.

The research quoted said that women on average only wash their bras 6 times per year  and spend £2,700 on bras in a lifetime.

There was a real split in opinion of the callers this morning, they either washed them daily of almost not at all.

I think we tend to do what our mother's did, I am in the wear once then wash camp.

It varies, sometimes one wear and then wash (especially if I've had a really busy day!) sometimes a couple of wears and then wash.

Can after a couple of wears be added to the options!

Bras every 2-3 days depending on how hot and sticky I have been :vom:

Knickers every day (of course) so always buy 2-3 prs knickers to each bra so can still have matching set each day.

6 times a year does seem rather infrequent...unless they mean each bra gets washed 6 times a year cos most of us have more than one bra (I hope!).

A more important question is, even if you wash on the gentlest setting with only other white items why do the bras so quickly start to look "aged"? I used to spend quite a bit on bras but the expensive ones seem to discolour as quickly as the cheap ones so I reckoned it was cheaper to buy the cheap ones and throw them out when they look tired than the expensive ones, but it is not a very eco-approach so any tips on extending the life of a bra would be great!

Well, more often than six times a year! but not every day ... I see at least three other people have ticked the least frequent option though.

I am 'Orpington' rather than 'Bantam' size, my bras are underwired and they cost a lot of money. I don't like to wash them too often as they do wear out more quickly.

I also don't feel they get particularly dirty, obviously in very hot weather I'll wash them more frequently and if we get the summer they're promising us then I might join the every couple of days camp!

PS: Caroline, the reason bras 'age' quickly is because they are mostly nylon/synthetic, and it picks up dye from other items in the wash, apparently. If you wash them completely on their own, or handwash them, this shouldn't happen but life's too short for that personally. If you've got white or flesh-coloured ones that are looking tired, they respond quite well to a dip in Dylon, though!

In my defence I have ample boobage & they take up an awful amount of room on the drier :lol:

Oh, & I only have 2 which I really like :?

:lol::lol::lol: that had me in hysterics Sarah - do they really take up that much room?

I found that the dryer knackered the elastic in mine, so dry them all away from direct heat. Not sure whether they last longer or not though.

That ample boobage comes in handy - Tasha found a use for hers last weekend - stifling a flapping chicken!:lol::lol:

I dry mine either outside on a day like today or over the pipes in the airing cupboard. I find that most of them stand up pretty well to machine washing. I don't tend to have expensive ones, I am lucky to be a pretty average size so just buy cheap M&S underwired usually black or white. I find fancy ones are often uncomfortable.

I'm a couple of days sort of person - but I don't wear a bra all of the day - I take it off at any opportunity

I have a couple of fancy ones - but they're uncomfortable.... and one black and one flesh coloured for every day wear...........and flesh colour isn't the right colour for me either Clare :D - I wonder whose skin it does match?

I am not keen on wearing bras even though I should. Do you remember the old saying that you should be able to fit a pencil under your boobs? Well, I can fit a small branch of WH Smith under mine these days!

I wash training bras after one use cos they are too-o-o-o- yuck to even think about putting on again. Perhaps every two or so wears for the others.

Depends what I've been doing & the weather really, if it's hot & sticky they get thrown in the washpot everyday, but if I'm cool as a cucumber maybe 3 days or so?

I'm not really sure as I have a selection of bras "on the go" at any one time as I can't wear a dark bra under a pale top, so it may get thrown over the back of the chair til I wear an appropriate coloured top again. They all get hooked up & put in the machine the next time I have a load it will go with, usually once a week or so I do a "cleardown"

I love the size analogies! I've always been told that more than a handful is a waste....I have a fair amount of waste (unless you have big hands :lol: ). I am obviously an Orpington, whereas my sister is a bantam........ :anxious: (I'm so glad she doesn't come on here!!!)
