My poor Edwina- please all keep your fingers crossed for her

Recommended Posts

Have not long been back from the vets with our gorgeous ex-batt girl Edwina. Last night she seemed to be having some trouble with her breathing so we took her first thing.

It turns out that her oviduct has been filling with fluid which is passing on further down into her abdomen, this then swells up which is pressing on her other organs making it difficult to get air into her lungs, her crop to empty, etc. They immediately drained some of this liquid off to help her breath a little easier....unfortunately this will keep recuring and eventually cause an infection which will turn into septicimia and she will die. The only other option they had was a very high risk operation to remove her oviduct.

We have gone with this as i couldn't bear to lose my little sweetheart, she would normally have a 70% survivial rate but this is lower due to her being in a weakened state. They have a fantastic medical team and the lead surgeon teaches this prcoedure all over the country and had many foreign students come to learn from him so she has the best possible chance.

Sorry for the long post, i just thought i would ask that you would all keep your fingers tightly crossed that she pulls through this, she is our top girl in the group so i hope she is strong enough to get through this. Her op is at 3.30 pm this afternoon.

This has only happened because of the way ex-batts are 'modified' to be prolific egg layers and their poor little bodies can't cope with it. I hope one day battery hens will be no more and no more lovely girls will have to suffer at the hands of man saving a few quid!!

Thank you all for your support but my beautiful brave girl has cancer. It has spread to most parts of her body and there is nothing they can do for her. They asked for our pernission to put her to sleep during the operation.

They have sent a sample away as they think this is a sort of cancer caused by a virus that she may have picked up very young. I pray my other girls will be ok.

To make things worse martha is now very poorly and is currently with them, i am yet to hear from oh what they think is wrong with her.

She was an amazing girl with such a lovely nature. I can't believe she is gone, i'm in such a state but feel so grateful to have had the time i had with. She will never be fotgotten.

My darling martha also had a tumerous growth in her gizzard that could not be removed... My poor angel had to be put to sleep. I cannot believe this is happening, i am just glad every day we have had them we have loved them and spoilt them.

I can now only hope this is not the virus form and that my other angels will be ok. Thank you again for your kind words, it is nice to knows others understand.

RIP beautiful angels edwina and martha

Sorry to hear about Edwina and Martha. You have done the very best you could for them, and they will have appreciated every minute they had in the fresh air. That's what makes it worth while with these girls, even though it's so heartbreaking at times.
