Swine flu - omleteers update?

Recommended Posts

That is a bit of a worry Karin - can you do what you can to help her immune system? - diet? Echinacea? that sort of thing? Do these things make a difference if the immune system is suppressed anyway?

I would speak to the doctors perhaps there are things in place for children like her. Tamiflu or vaccination if an when it comes. I don't know, just a thought really. I would definately have a word with someone you never know.

Just had 1st reported death in Swindon. JD sick in night and now has a headache :(

I have just had a read on the tinterweb and I am not the only one who is worried by this. The medication she is on is called Methotrexate, which when you google it, you get links for things to do with cancer etc  I can tell you I had a real shock when I first heard she'd be on it thinking what aren't the drs telling us? It seems if she does have to take Tamiflu, she'll have to be watched closely to make sure her toxins aren't raised. More blood tests I feel, which I'm sure she'll just love. Not!

The NHS swine flu advice info page says this

I’m on immunosuppressants. Am I more at risk from swine flu?

Yes. If you take immunosuppressants you have a greater risk of becoming infected with any virus, including swine flu, and will be less able to fight it off once you have it.

Will my dose of immunosuppressants be altered in the event of an outbreak?

Your doctor may advise that your dose of immunosuppressants needs to change. The appropriate dose will vary from patient to patient.

Can I take antivirals if I’m on immunosuppressants?

Yes, on the advice of a doctor it is safe for you to take Tamiflu or Relenza.

I will be phoning her dr on Monday just to make sure and get any advice on what best to do. I'm sure though, if there was a worry, someone would have phoned to let us know. Wouldn't they? :anxious:

What did the docs say? I only ask because I'm on methotrexate too so my immune system is suppressed and I'm a bit worried by all of this swine flu business too.

I didn't phone the doctors as I found this http://www.bspar.org.uk/downloads/other/BSPAR_Swine_Flu_Advice.pdf and it seemed to answer some of my worries. I have told her she needs to wash her hands lots, use tissues etc and I keep meaning to buy some of the anti bac gel stuff for her to carry round school. I think the best thing you can do is watch out for the symptoms and if you have the very high temp plus one of more of the other things, phone your doctor immediately explaining about the methotrexate etc. Thats what I am planning to do with my YD. I also found out the day before yesterday that my good friend who's DD is in my YD class at school has it, so I am watching YD like a hawk but also trying not worry her.

How long is the isolation period? Just i've read on the internet that you are only contagious for 5 days after symptoms start, and that you are contagious as long as you have them? Does anyone know which is correct?

I have a horrible feeling i've spread it around the south west :S I didn't know i'd had it for 6 days :?

according to the NHS swine flu website http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Pandemic-flu/Pages/QA.aspx#incubation

How long does the virus live on surfaces?

The flu virus can live on a hard surface for up to 24 hours, and a soft surface for around 20 minutes.

What is the incubation period for swine flu?

According to the Health Protection Agency, the incubation period for swine flu (time between infection and appearance of symptoms) can be up to seven days, but is most likely to be between two and five days. It is, however, too early to be able to provide details on virus characteristics, including incubation period, with absolute certainty at this time.

When are people most infectious?

People are most infectious to others soon after they develop symptoms, although they continue to shed the virus (for example, in coughs and sneezes) for up to five days (seven days in children). People become less infectious as their symptoms subside, and once their symptoms are gone, they are no longer considered infectious to others.

Well i knew it was spreading in my area and today i saw council people putting up anti-viral collection point signs so i guess its spreading pretty quickly. I'm just waiting to get it now and hope not to get it whilst on holiday or on my birthday in the middle of Aug.

anti-viral collection point signs

My local M&S Simply Food had a huge stack of boxes of "anti-viral" paper tissues at the entrance to the store today. I didn't look to see how much they cost. What would be anti-viral about them, do you think? Er, perhaps I should have stopped and read the label on the boxes to see if these are something specially effective or if it is just M&S spotting a "business opportunity".

Mmmm, swine flu as business opportunity .... do you think that home-made three-fruit marmalade with whisky could be "anti-viral"?

Do you not think the increases in numbers though are due to the fact that they are diagnosing it from symptons and not swabs. There always seems to be various bugs going around which match some of the symptons from what I've read and the amount of people who I've spoken to who think they have it as they've got a sore throat amazes me.

We had an email from a company yesterday offering to sell us a swine flu awareness poster at £24.99!

I think its to do with the new Swine flu hotline and website and collection points. The concert band i play in have been thrown out of the community centre we rehe"Ooops, word censored!" in u ntil further notice, along with all the other groups that use it. Not because there are lots of people with it but it is a designated collection point for the distribution of tamiflu under the new system. Thankfully we have found a temporary new home in a chuch hall some miles away.

That's exactly what I've been thinking.

My neighbour is 5 and she has it. We went round last night (mom is a nurse) and took her temperature which was a bit high (38.1) and thought she'd be fine so stayed there.

They're trying not to worry her and so haven't mentioned swine flu and called it SF when talking about it.

This morning I looked after while my mom + her mom went to get the tamiflu, and she said to me, "Lewis, do you have SF like me?"

I think I'll have it soon after spending time with her, but hope not. She has a 3 week old brother who we're looking after to keep him away from the virus, and a 3yo sister who is keeping away aswell.
