Guest
Hi, For me the last week of March and first week in June will be taken up by work experience. I haven't got a clue what to do. I'd love to do teaching or work with animals. However I wouldn't like to go to a primary school and there are no animal sanctuarys (farm animals) that I know of nearby. Anybodt have any help, ideas or advice? Martin My oldest is about to do work experience.. he didn't know what to do so I offered to get him some work at the Funeral Directors - I know the boss very well... but he wasn't too keen - so I got him some work at the pre-school nursery that runs in one of my churches... kids have no sense of adventure nowadays do they!! A bit of embalming, some he"Ooops, word censored!"-scrubbing - how much more fun can you have?? Phil

AnnieP
One of my ex pupils has just started working in a funeral directors..... can't quite get that myself, but he's a lovely lad, and will be really good at it. My Father in Law was an apprentice coffin maker when he left school many years ago....... I think he stuck it for about 6 weeks!
Egluntyne
My daughter shadowed the local coroner......loved it. No 1 son worked for the ambulance service....office work and...the bit he liked best...cleaning the ambulances with a power washer on the outside. No 2 son worked for a friend of our who is a plumber. He enjoyed it so much that he decided to leave school and do a Modern Apprenticeship, working 4 days for our friend and one day at college per week. He absolutely loves it. He comes home filthy and exhausted, treads mud all over the house as he never remembers to take off his seven league boots before coming in... and I have to say that although initially we were disappointed that he didn't stay on at school (s"Ooops, word censored!"by middle class parent streak I'm ashamed to say His GCSE results were very good) it was definitely the right move for him. And as he never ceases to point out, he will not have the ridiculous amount of debt that his sister and brother have, when he finishes his course. He is coming quite handy, too. He has replaced a loo seat for me, and sorted out a neighbours leaking tap!! See if you can find a plumber to take you on Martin...they are never short of work!! Martin B
Hatton Country Village Martin!!! They have loads of animals of all varieties - sheep, cows, pigs, chickens and if you are a fantastic employee for them they could give you a couple of Guinea Pigs as payment - they have got thousands of them!! They even do sheep racing - you will be the envy of all your mates when they say they have had a pants time working in some boring office and you can tell them you were busy racing sheep!! Where is it located? It sounds fun.

Lesley
Haven't you been to Hatton, Martin? I thought I'd mentioned it to you ages ago - for visiting, not work experience. The shops there are brilliant as well and they have a butcher which is where we bought meat before we decided to grow our own.
Martin B
I can't remember you mentioning it! I have a bad memory thought, I'll have to schedule it into my plans sometime!
Egluntyne
Revnev says re undertakers: A bit of embalming, some he"Ooops, word censored!"-scrubbing - how much more fun can you have?? A (female) friend of ours is a fully fledged undertaker and has done all the embalming courses. She says its a conversation stopper when she meets new people on social occasions!! And she is very good at giving make up tips!!

kazaddress
I did my work experiance with barlcays bank... but i REALLY wanted to do it with neotronics (who built robots, and their headquarters were 10metres from my front door). I can also recomend companies like www.Dstl.gov.uk and qinetiq.com both have fantastic positions for summer students / work experiance.. and you get to play with some cool stuff! (if you got a place I would be more then happy to take you under my wing for a few weeks)
Looney
Hey Martin, How about doing a parent swap with a friend and go to work with their mum/dad? I did this with my best friend so I spent two weeks working in the pre-prep section of the school her dad taught at. It was good fun even though I had no intention of going into teaching. The experience was valuable even if purely to boost confidence and it meant I got a lift there every morning! My friend spent two weeks in the dental department of Lincoln hospital where my mum used to work.

I'm in the office so don't actually do the embalming and mortuary duties but do see them going on. I'm not a nutter, honestly (though certain friends might disagree), I'm as sane as the next lunatic . Egluntine is right - it is a conversation stopper but I've noticed that people clam up and go 'well, we won't be talking about that' or decide they want to discuss it in great depth and find out about all the trade 'secrets' - all those old wives tales they have heard and believe go on - so I'll talk for ages to put them straight until they just glaze over and find someone 'normal' to talk to. . Martin B
I've just dug this thread up because I've wrote 5 letters now, but still need to write a few more. I've wrote to Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Derby County and Walsall expressing an interest in working in their media/market department. Fingers Crossed! Guest
I think if you want to work in media/marketing then you have to know that 'I have wrote to' is wrong! It should be 'I have written to'. Maybe that's the problem! My DD2 has got a week's work in our optician's. She is looking forward to it! Good luck Martin!
