Going to Wernlas on Saturday - Which Breed????

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Well, that's us the proud owner of some chooks!!! Just gotta do the 6 hour drive to collect them now.

There are no Lavender Aracucanas available at the moment and anyone wanting one will have to add their name to an ever growing waiting list. However, we did manage to reserve:

1 Buff Orpington

1 Light Sussex

1 Rhode Island Red

We will chose our 4th chook when we are there. With this in mind, what would be your choice? We would like something different and are not bothered about the quantity of eggs. Hopefully, we'll have some photos for you on Sunday (at last!)

Regards

They had an 18 month waiting list on the Appenzellers when I was there in July Tasha

(which is why I was delighted at finding Nyssa, as it meant I didn't have to wait  )

I never understand that, they sold me one of their breeding girls as they were disbanding a breeding pen?????

My Cream Legbar Leela was quite nervy to start with and a little flighty too. I wing clipped her which curbed her flightyness nicely, and once she started laying she lost the nerviness and just became a joy. She is a very affectionate girl, and whilst I would never tell the other 11, she is definitely my favourite

Her blue eggs are fantastic.

They are quite small large fowl (smaller than the Wernlas Olive) so just bear that in mind with you getting an Orpington :D

I'm sure they mentioned the Cream Legbars when I phoned, giving us blue eggs. There seems to be mixed opinions on this bird, some saying they are fanatstic and otherssaying they are too fiesty and flighty.

Regards

I've had Rusty since she was 10 weeks old I don't reguard her as either she is lively she's smarter than the other 2 bars and more friendly

Road runner the Gold legbar is flighty and no were near as friendly does not like to be handled at all throws a stroop for no reason at all but I'd still recommend gold legbars through she dosen't walk if she can run and dosen't hop off any thing if she can jump 2 foot up and 3 foot out

this is Rusty taken this morning shes about 25 weeks

oh lucky you! I was nearly seriously distracted by all the pens of really cute banties!!

I came away with a cream legbar and a partridge cochin a couple of weeks ago.

I would also have liked a blue cochin and lavender aracuana, but fully booked up.

My new girls are gorgeous.

Enjoy your trip (are you sure you've only got room for one more?!!)

I have had a similar experience to Debs with Cream Legbars.

Saffy was very young when she arrived and was nervous and flighty. She has started laying now and has calmed down no end...she still isn`t in love with the idea of cuddles but will tolerate her weekly health check. She is quote a comical character, keeping OH and I entertained :D

I got her the same time as my buff Orp and they are firm friends :D Brandy, the Orp is a biggun' much bigger than my Splash and Jubilee but Saffy holds her own with them :D

Saffy lays green eggs though...so we think there are some rogue genes in there somewhere

Cream Legbar or a Barnvelder would be my choice - mine came from there. My cream legbar is not a sit on your lap sort of chicken, but lays great blue eggs, looks great with her hairdo and a bright little girl. The double-laced Barnvelder has a wonderful coat and is actually the lady from Wernlas' favourite breed - a pretty big heavy girl. Dorkings also great for something different and now considered rare.

I have a Dorking and she is a wonderful girl not particually cuddly but if you offer some food she will jump up on your arm for it. She also follows me round the garden like a dog and everything i do has to be inspected however she is a jumper and even with her wings clipped she can jump about 5 foot and she can be a little noisy. The big however is that i rehomed her from somone else who had her in a pen with a wernlas olive and somthing else i can't remember and she was so bored she was pulling out the others feathers.

She hasn't done that once with us but we do free range most of the time. So i could have an unusual one here but i thought i'd mention it. As far as i can tell they need either free ranging or alot of room and interest.

She is an absolute stunner but big with a big personality.

I wanted araucanas and barnvelders but we made a choice from what was immediately available at Wernlas so we came back with a cream legbar (really sweet), a wernlas olive and a RIR. They are great excellent quality birds and we now have lovely green and blue eggs.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far! Still not made up my mind. Will probably just wait until we get there and see what takes our fance on the day. However, it is my daughter's 12th birthday and I said that she could choose our 4th chook!!!
