Just glanced at the legend at the bottom of the forum and saw 5 'hidden' users listed, that has to be a record.

 

Sometimes mods go 'hidden', but we're usually visible so that regular users can see we're online.

 

Who else 'hides'?

Funny, this has puzzled me as I've never understood why someone might hide. Sometimes if I'm looking at the forum while at work I just view as a guest, rather than logging on, but I don't think I've ever 'hidden'. Go on, own up who's peeking then!

I find it happens sometimes that the system ( not sure if it's mine or Omlets) chooses to lock me out and I become a guest - is that what you mean?

 

I only find out when I try to reply and it won't let me - so I then have to hunt for my password! Don't know if that happens to others.

No, you need to log on to view and notified posts. Hidden is when you choose the option in your profile so that regular users can't see you (well, until you post that is) or you can choose to go hidden on the log-in page. I've always wondered why people bother to do it.

Well, it helps with the whole guilt thing...

 

You see, if it doesn't actually say I am logged on, then I obviously can't be (depite the fact I am and reading posts etc) so therefore I can persuade myself that I am not spending so much time on here as I really am, whilst supposedly working....

 

Ok ok, it makes no sense even to me, but I feel less guilty, so therefore it works!!

I am back now though, and don't care who sees me

 

I can see it would have its uses for mods though

I hide because people outside the forum know I use it and I dont particularly want to be that visible all the time

 

Its nothing to do with hiding from Omleteers so no getting a complex mind!

I hide. It's historical - I was once harrassed online on another forum and preferred to read my PMs in peace without being hassled. I now hide on all the forums I visit.

I don't hide but sometimes when I visit the forum and then go out and leave it up on my computer for a few hours I wish I had! It makes me look as if I have nothing better to do .

 

If I look at the forum on my blackberry I don't alway log on.

Following on from that, I've often wondered if you're still shown as "browsing the forum" if you go away but leave the forum page open (which I often do). I thought I read somewhere that the list is based on recent activity so if you aren't active, does your name disappear on other people's pages? You can't tell yourself because you'd have to "refresh" to see the new list and then you'd be on it because you've been active .

... I am "hidden" - as there was a bit of "hassle" a few years ago on here and the perp took it upon themselves to PM myself and another former member The mods stepped in and had a couple of us "hidden" online - and so I have stayed. Like Lydia has said - its nothing personal, just historical.

 

Have never bothered to change back - but rest assured - I am not part of MI5 or anything untoward, just a normal Omleteer with sadly only 2 hens again

ANH, the legends are only accurate to within the last 5 minutes, so what you are viewing may be historical. hence seeing someone online on the main forum page, but not on other pages; they may have recently logged out.

 

The forum automatically logs you out after a period of inactivity... I think it's 5 minutes. It's not advisable to leave the forum pages open if you're still logged on - we've had a few instances in the past of users' friends hopping on and causing mischief
