Flooding

Recommended Posts

We have big old trees in front of our house with protection orders on them. A neighbour was always complaining about them being so big until I pointed out the we would all be under water without them, we are lower than the road surface which runs over a culverted tributary of the Stour. In very heavy rain the culvert manhole cover rises & the flooded stream pours out, we.ve had water pouring into our porch & under the side door into the cellar but thats all, I cannot imagine how it must feel to have it all inside your house. My heart goes out to anyone who has been flooded.

I agree, it must be appalling to be flooded out of your house - every sympathy to those people.

The road outside ours was flooded last week; I had to leave car and wade/walk the mile home. At it's deepest, the water on the road was above knee-height (but not flowing, else I'd've not tried walking through it!). I took trousers off as they're dry-clean only, so am glad that there wasn't anyone around to see me

House is absolutely fine, so am very lucky. Am pretty sure it will shut again today or tomorrow as the rain is hammering down again & the ground is saturated.

At least they're only forecasting up to 4 inches this time, pretty normal levels if it weren't for last week's flooding. Fortunately we've had a lot of high winds too which helps the ground dry more quickly, so fingers crossed today's rain can be accommodated by the rivers. The tides are lower this week too, which will help the western towns like Cockermouth and Workington.

Hope you've found the cause of your flooding OSH and that it's not going to happen again. There are houses over here that have flooded for the first time in living memory, taking lots of people by surprise.

For anyone interested, the Radio Cumbria website contains news reports and photos. I've seen some Youtube clips too and

of the River Leven at Backbarrow (where Windermere drains out towards the sea) shows the astounding force of water. That's the road bridge that has become a waterfall. Or should I say, that WAS the road bridge, fortunately only a minor road in the village so it shouldn't cause much inconvenience for locals.

And a tornado yesterday too! It's all happening up there! Yesterday the weather girl said "watch out for tornadoes - strong convection across here" - this morning she said "we didn't see that one coming". Yes she did - it was the same girl! OH's bimbo (sooo irritating).

So I hope everyone's battening the hatches and it doesn't amount to much - keep safe peeps.
