dancing cloud Posted February 11, 2010 Share Posted February 11, 2010 (edited) There's a small very short-notice rescue of ex-batts in Essex this Saturday and some of them are going to be my little girls, in lovely time for my birthday on Sunday . An email came out yesterday afternoon saying there would be hens available on Saturday and asking if I could take them at such short notice (of course I can!), followed by another email today giving me a collection time . As it's just a very small rescue of 50 girlies, I'm not needed as a volunteer, so I'll keep my name down to do that another day. This will be my third batch of ex-batt adoptees and I can't believe how excited I still am about more little girls coming my way. Definitely the best birthday pressie I'll get this year. I've been up since six (though that was mainly due to Puddy jumping on me to demand breakfast) and still with three hours to go before I leave, the is all set up and ready to receive, the satnav's programmed and the cat carriers are lined with newpaper and ready to go in the car . The 50-hen rescue turned into 82 hens and most of the adopters were immediately able to do the chicken maths and squeeze in one or two more . I'd said I'd take between 3 and 6, whatever was left over, so 6 it was. They're not in a terrible state - 2 have naked necks and fronts and are down to their undies , one has no tail, one has a totally bare lower back, one less bare and one is so fully feathered you'd never believe where she came from! There will be photos at some point, I promise. My nephews picked the names Lady (a female friend of Thomas the Tank Engine apparently) and Rose (no idea), and this gave rise to the theme for this batch of the Song Birds. Lady, Lola, Lucy, Rose, Rhiannon and Roxanne. Lady and Roxanne, the fully-feathered and least bare hens, took an instant dislike to each other and waged war for a couple of hours . Roxanne now has a swollen eye and Lady has a nicked comb - a truce was called only when they were too tired to continue. They've all found food and drink, Rose and Rhiannon the two least-feathered got there first, and they've all been put to bed after a certain amount of crawling around in a mixture of aubiose, food and poo to catch them . Of the big girls, neither Daisy nor Hope could be bothered to even come and look at them, and all the rest have been and given them a good shouting at.
