LJ's Chooks

Chicken of fate?? (Sad news today)

Recommended Posts

Oh how exciting my neighbour has just told me a farmer freind has found a speckledy chook dumped in a box in one of his fields ....? She said we had chooks and he's asked if we'd like it?

I'm immediately suspicious that it is a boy or a troublesome girl!

I've said I can't take another boy, but ok if it us a girl???

If it's a young one, what's the easiest way to tell... Is it pointy neck feathers for a boy and rounded for a girl.... Or should I just leave well alone?

...it's not still in the box I think it's in a barn for the moment.

How could someone just abandon it in a box... That's just

Absolutely...our eglu is always set up for emergencies and spiders!!

Am I right about the feathers though?... One boy is definitely enough for us, and mocha has certainly calmed the girls down, so I don't want to upset the equilibrium... But how can I say no if it's definitely a girl???? In an ideal world, when I see it in the morning there will be an egg too!!!!

Well she's here and we've named her mallion after the farmer that found her abandoned in a cardboard box. She is beautiful but very neglected. I will try and poast a photo if she makes it through the next few days.

Her legs are covered in lifted scales or missing ones and she's struggling to walk. She has recently moulted, and has potential to be gorgeous with lots of tlc.

We've sprayed her with johnsons anti mite and ant powder Nd smothered her legs with Vaseline. Will the johnsons spray treat scaly leg mite too?

Fingers crossed and hopefully she'll pull through!!!

Fingers crossed here for a happy outcome

It does make me wonder if cof's will become an all to often occurence with there popularity rising.

Sadly they are often bought on a whim with no realisation of the care and time they need or the destruction they can cause to your garden. Friends are shocked that my once pristine manicured lawn and sumptious borders are no more :) instead I now have what resembles the somme :) But I love my girls more :D

I hope I am wrong :!:

Well done LJ :D

I personally would get a scaley leg mite treatment, as I don't think the Johnson's spray works on leg mites. Good luck with her and looking forward to pictures :D

What do you recommend Christian???

She' pretty much stayed in the eglu all day, ha a little to eat but that's all. I've shut the door tonight because of the storm and hope she'll be a bit brighter in the morning

I think you could be right, but she's not come out at all this morning and not eaten or drunk anything.

I figure she needs to be eating to worm her. I have put apple cider vinegar in her water.

From what I can tell I think she is a welsummer, she has beautiful feather markings andhas undergone a major moult and has lots of new feathers and bright yellow legs.

If she makes an appearance I'm ready with the camera but she seems terrified of people, so I think this is going to be a long slow road to recovery.

I know this probably is a daft question but would pro biotic drops help??? I haven't got probiotic yoghurt but have got drops..... ?????

I'd say the probiotics can't do any harm, go for it.......re the scaly mite I used surgical spirit and vaseline applied every 2-3 days I think on Blossom my little COF, the SS is easier & quicker to get hold of & treatment can be started quicker than waiting for an internet order to arrive.

Is she eating & drinking at all? I have some avipro powder and some nutri-drops here if you'd like some today, I can meet you part way if that helps........ (we are near Chichester)

When my Buffie was starving herself.....am I ever going to stop trotting out this story  ?!......I was advised to make a mush of cake crumbs, egg yolk & honey to syringe into her as an emergency energy boost, it worked for her :)

I hope everything comes together for little Mallion

What's the news on Mallion today? Hope she is a little better. x

Sorry! pulled up an old post from emails of yesterday.

Mine all love butter when they are poorly. I just put a bit on my fingers and they go mad to get it, gives them energy. I let them take as much as they want, they always stop when they have had enough. You can always mix a bit of honey in it or crushed garlic and herbs. Live meal worms if you can get them. Poor little girl must have been badly frightened. :(

Hope she's OK, poor thing. What a rotten thing for someone to do, abandoning her in a box to starve to death. I can't believe how cruel some people can be.

Well done you for taking her in.

Grapes and/or cucumber, cut up really small, can be a tempting treat and a good way to get liquid into them.

thanks for your kind offer Sha, we got her to eat and drink a little today, but she is obviously in pain with her legs and is very unsteady. I've seen the wind blow her over a couple od times today, but fingers crossed and eating and drinking will help, aswell as all the treatments we've given her!
