Daphne
My OH and 3 others are on a cycling trip in Greece. Meant to be home tonight but obviously that isn't going to happen. There appears to be dissension in the ranks - 2 of them want to stay because they are having a ball; one wants to come home because he has work to do and the 4th is a partner in a business/lead role in a opera due on early May and he also wants to come home. The only way we can think of is for them to hire a car in Athens and drive to Chunnel/port (maybe Spain). There are children, responsibilities, parents, animals, countless arrangements to be made etc here in the UK but we 4 women are all just getting on with it. But I do feel sorry for people with important travel arrangements about births/deaths/marriages and illness.

AJuff
Well OH would consider any train, bus, car, bike BUT as he's the Captain he'll have to fly the plane back!!! I am imagining AJuff's OH to be like that hunka hunka burnin' captain in the Virgin ad (comments currently clean): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KS_6HHQ7jOA Lucky Ajuff! I wish!!!! Still not back, slot cancelled. No news yet!
patsylabrador
I feel sorry for a group of Aussie soldiers I know of who are trying to get home after their tour in Afghanistan and are stuck in their barracks. Poor blokes. It's not all about 'I want,I want' society. On an environmental note and I'm sure I'll be corrected but any 'green' gains from this misery will surely be offset by the volcano itself. Ain't Nobody Here
I'm starting to wonder how many kids and teachers might be stranded and might not be back for school on Tuesday . My (special) school may have to close if there are too many staff off.
Daphne
I know someone who knows 6 teachers who won't be coming back on time - its bound to be like this all over the country. Our OH's won't be back till a week on Monday; assuming there is travel by then
Purplemaniacs
The small village school I work in only has three teachers and one of those is stuck abroad. I am sure there are many in a similar situation. Chrissie
abwsco
The board I mod on has lots of people stranded in Orlando. Some are posting that the earliest flight they've been able to book is for the 29th April. They were due to fly home tomorrow. Ali (meezers on here) has got out of Mexico but is now stranded in Newark although I think she's booked on a flight on Wednesday.
Woodcat
Erin was listening to the news about asthma sufferers - "what should I do?" so I told her if she smells eggy air to go indoors. "What if it's indoors too?" Blame your father and you've survived so far. lol tell her to make sure she takes her preventers and carries her Ventolin at all times. I've been having massive problems today and it doesn't smell eggy at all lol. I'm guessing it's ash cause the car is filthy and i'm usually totally in control and today I'm definitely not
SarahJo
A little bird has whispered "wednesday" at the earliest now - I do know some airlines are Monday (on review) but still reckon it will be longer Peace and quiet in the skies - no environmental let up - and lets all go panic buy tomatoes, peppers and other fruit and veg, I think its not so peace and quiet afterall I had already thought about the "what ifs" before they are now coming round - all I can say is stay calm, there's absolutely NOTHING you can do about it and try to prepare to be home alone/change travel plans/make cancellations etc. Oh, and as I washed the car today - I noticed the "dust" filtering down in the sunshine, so yes, if you do have asthma be prepared at all times. Even if you think its not in the atmosphere - it IS

AJuff
I've just received a text from OH saying he's scheduled to fly from Sharm to Malaga! He's not sure what the plans are after that?
SarahJo
He goes from Falafel to Sangria Sorry - I know its not funny, at least he will be closer to home should they have another "flight window" open. OH is at work tonight, I will try to post here if I hear any news of movement
Ziggy
He goes from Falafel to Sangria Sorry, shouldn't laugh, but couldn't help it... As SarahJo says, at least he'll be a bit closer... same with DH hopefully reaching Denmark tomorrow morning... half way back to UK!! I hope everyone gets home soon, before sampling the delicacies of every country along the way (I could murder a sangria right now)... AJuff
I think he's gone from reasonaable to very frustrated by the situation. He should have been on an 8 day holiday from last Thursday so I'm not sure what will happen to those missing days. I'd say relaxing on the terrace in the sun reading a book was a kind of enforced holiday . . . Looks like my poor DS will be home alone on Monday as the rest of us are back at work/school. His school starts back on Tuesday. From this term I have three children at three different schools but that's another story. DS was going to have a dads and lads day together what a shame they'll miss it. Looks like I'll have to rush back at lunchtime as I hate the thought of him cooking and eating alone . . . he's only 10!
rosie
My daughter has been in the French Alpes for the past 5 months, working in a ski resort. She was due to fly back this coming Thursday, but this has obviously been cancelled. She had to hand in all her ski equipment and skis yesterday, and will now be cleaning the hotel for the summer close down. Not much for her to do in a ski resort when not working without her skis though. She tells me that she will get paid for the extra days she works, but at the rate of 1 Euro per day She is not a happy bunny at all

Christian
My hayfever has gone from ok, to driving me nuts. One tablet a day just isn't doing it. This week has been dreadful. Must be the air quality
Valkyrie
Have had the lurgy so don't know whether it's hayfever plus. Ciaran cleaned the car yesterday - well he poured water over it in record time - and already it's covered in a fine yellow dust - I'm assuming that the ash is more of a grey colour. We had a small aircraft over yesterday afternoon going northwards. This morning a similar shaped aircraft going south. I wonder if they are testing the air. Kirstine
Nothing compared with some of the epic journeys here, but OH is facing a drive from Edinburgh to Bristol and back tomorrow (back Tuesday if he can coincide with stepson and stay with him in Cardiff). Stepdaughter and friend were due to go home on Friday, got flights rearranged for tomorrow but it doesn't look like that will happen. SD has to be at work in France on Wed and her friend teaching in London by Tue. SD has had enormous trouble getting a cross-channel ferry ticket, which she is very frustrated about as unlike most of her fellow-travellers she had planned to get the ferry all along! aaaargh!
