Car Booting

Recommended Posts

I have never done a car boot before and can only vaguely remember going to one many many years ago.

OH & I are planning to do one in the summer as we seem to have collected so much stuff we no longer need and use we have to get rid before the house bursts at the seams!

I wondered if anyone knew how to find the best/busiest one in the West Midlands? :? Any recommendations?

Also any tips for selling/pricing etc would be very welcome :D

Dont let them climb in your car either... I was carbooting and a friend had the next pitch .. well they climbed in her car so I turfed them out quick smart and sent them packing! she was so worried bless her!

Hi Em

I don't know what side of the West Midlands you are but I know there used to be a very big one at Bridgnorth, Shropshire (not too far from Wolverhampton). I'm sure they still hold it every Sunday. There are some big ones in Telford too so I believe.

This might help :D

Emma, there's a decent one just outside Bordesley near Redditch. Can't remember the name of the farm, but it's on Weights Lane, and backs on to the cross city line to Redditch. I suggest it because it's not too big like the Studley one, and very popular in the summer with a good mix of personal sellers and interesting traders.

I can only suggest you keep the very best stuff in your footwell, and put it out last, otherwise any dealers will relieve you of it for a low price whilst you are distracted trying to set up your stall. Beware of hands going into the boot while you are setting up, and keep your money around your waist in a bum bag, have this on before you get out of the car and save your change for a good float. Don't accept big notes for cheap items as they may be fake.

Apart from that, have fun!

Just wanted to add you can play the dealers at their own game...MY late MIL had Saladware (which is very collectable) amongst her stuff, and as already said all the dealers swarm around the car when you are trying to unpack...I put a piece of saladware in full view ...but didn't get it out of the car....and that's where it stayed (what sell it at a car boot??..you must be joking...I love it and I'm keeping it on display in my kitchen!!)....but we did generate a lot of interest and because of that we got rid of some chipped and less lovely stuff...

I absolutely agree about selling for a pittance though..I'm afraid when someone offered me a completely ridiculous sum for quite a pretty dressing table stool (£2.50) I refused and told them I'd rather throw it away than accept that :notalk: . the prices some people offer are nothing more than an insult

Hi Em

There are loads on this link. You can search by County.

Not sure of good ones in your area, but the one near Bridgnorth is very good.

We are also going to do a boot sale very soon. There is one about 5 minutes drive away from us at Himley Hall that is also very good, so we are planning a little trip there on Sunday, to have a look at what sells and prices etc.

We thought we would have a look first before loading up the car and not selling anything :)

We have done a few over the years, they are great when they are over and you count up the money. :D

If you are not used to the whole car boot scene it is probably worth visiting the one you intend to sell at as a buyer first. When you first arrive as others have said it can be quite intimidating and there will be a band of vultures out to make a quick buck so beware.

My OH says that the best thing to do is arrive park your car lock it and have a look around for about 10 minutes then caome back to set out your stall. By then hopefully there will be others who have taken the attention of the bargain hunters and traders.

Don't attempt to do one on your own. It is best to have several people but at least 2 one to set up the other to deal with the punters. Check the value of a few thing on ebay first because you can make much more on lighter items that way and it will giev you an idea of value.

Have a couple of decorating tables and plenty of dust sheets to lay out your things on because the ground can be pretty muddy or dusty and some are in fields where animals have recently been. If the weather looks iffy take a few big plastic sheet and golf umbrellas with you too for a quick cover up.

Take on a role and don't be afraid to call people over to your stall, if you just sit there looking bored people will walk on by.

Good luck and have fun.

There's loads by us Em. I like the one at Highgate Football club in Dickens Heath for punters that pay over the odds

Studley is excellent if you want a lot of trade, there's a huge one at Branson's cross off junction 3 of the M42 towards Redditch on a Saturday and off junction 2 on a Sunday.

My advice is to price everything up before you go to save everyone asking how much.

Good luck!
