Wyandotte chickens

Recommended Posts

After going to the surrey country show yesterday and seeing loads of lovely chooks, it has made me want to expand my flock. I like the look of the wyandotte chooks and was just wondering what they were like. I have read about them in the books that i have got and on the internet but wanted to know what you wyandotte keepers think of them?

Thanks

Matt

I've got a Buff Laced Wyandotte thats sitting on eggs at the moment she's a little bit nervey around me ( I've only had her since easter) but she's not nasty. she can fly but only a short distance about 4 foot of the ground she does get picked on by 2 off my mid-order girls

but I'd certainly recommend dottes

I have a silver laced Wyandotte called Marion Davies. Got her at 9 months old. She has been with us for 6 weeks now and she is an absolute sweetheart, very friendly and willing to be picked up and petted. The only thing that concerned me was that she insisted on being top chicken and she was quite a bit smaller than the cuckoo maran (Brigitte Bardot). In the end she got her way. She did it without any fights or injuries and was happy for me to play rooster. (I made sure from day 1 that I was in charge...wish I had done that with the dogs but alas, not so) She has happily laid an egg every single day for 6 weeks. Not a day off, bless her. There are days when I scold her for being a bully (shoving others out of the way, hogging the treats, etc) but all things considered I can whole heartedly recommend the breed.

Good luck.

Colette.

I have a gold laced Wyandotte, and she is a broody nightmare

She's also one of my least affectionate chickens and has never crouched. That said, she's very pretty to look at and doesn't cause any trouble (although she does have a long standing feud with one of my ex batts!)

I think Wyandottes are lovely to look at - they're my favourite breed of chicken.

I have a Gold Laced Wyandotte called Guinevere. She's lovely to look at, but she's a total nightmare when she's broody! We have to go into the nestbox with thick gloves and a towel to cover her head when we go to chuck her out - if we didn't, I think we'd be covered in bruises and cuts! The only time I can pick her up (when she's not busy, that is) is when in the evening when she's dozy, but she is lovely then! She sings and doesn't stuggle at all. With any chicken, you could get one that's a nightmare or one that's lovely. Even if Guinevere is a little bosy and a bit of a bully sometimes, she's got a big personality and if I could get another Wyandotte, I would!

Hi.

I just wondered how do you play rooster? I presume it means showing them you are the boss?

Thank you

Yes, just showing the bully who is boss. I did it with a water pistol and by lightly pushing her when I saw her picking on others. She was sitting at the entrance to the coop for a while, stopping the others from getting in. Few squirts of water and she moved off grumbling.

I wish I was top dog with my dogs... sadly I am not..

I've had a GLW since she was 13 weeks and she's now 13 months. She's bottom of the pecking order and lets the others pull her feathers. Now she has to be separated during the day. She sits on a low roost and they come up and peck at her. She's very passive....except with me! Sometimes she sits next to me, somtimes she follows me but she does like to bite me! Sometimes when I'm removing one that's bullying her, she flies up and bites me. If I'm poo picking, she bites me. Very strange. She doesn't crouch, either. But a very sweet girl most of the time.
