Ain't Nobody Here

Anyone else's child flown the coop today?

Crikey - this opened a can of worms for me. It is almost 9 years to the day that we took our son to the Army Foundation College in Harrogate and I was thinking about it because it coincides with his official Army leaving date and 9/11.

It was a truly horrible day, when we got there he was barked at by a couple of Sergeants and then was taken off. We had a talk by senior officers and a tour and then the next time we saw him he was in army PT kit and we had to say goodbye. By prior arrangement we had said our proper goodbye at home and just said cheerio, I patted him on the shoulder, turned away, as did he, and walked away. I have never felt so wretched, I remember lots of crying Mums.

We went to a Pizza Hut with the other children as they hadn't eaten all day, but my daughter, who was very close to her brother started to cry, which set me off, which set off the twins. My poor husband was trying to comfort us all and goodness only knows what the waitress thought.

We've always stuck to the 'goodbye' ritual and when any of them go away they say 'We'll do it our way, thanks for all the food Mum and thanks for the lift Dad', soppy but it saves too many tears.

This probably seems maudlin but I'm trying to say it does get better and you do get used to them leaving, although as I think you've guessed, you never stop worrying.

When ES went last year - we worried about him making friends, however the Uni (Bangor) was fab, they had people all over the campus and the city welcoming new students. At the campus they had bbq's and people walking around with sandwiches, getting people out of their rooms, so "Ooops, word censored!"ody had chance to get lonely. Even one of his lecturers went and searched him out on the first day to arrange a meeting on the first evening of his fellow Chemistry students.

So I get the idea, that Uni's are very good at settling their students in and hopefully making sure that no one is unnecessarily lonely.

Bet he'll have a fab time. :D

The "Brat" goes to London on Tuesday. Induction Wednesday/Thursday.

Back home for a couple of days and then Freshers week starts next Sunday night with A "Ministry of Sound" party.

Mrs CCR is getting a bit panicky for all the reasons listed above, new friends, cooking, cleaning, even education!!!.

We've also just bought her a new car and she's insisting on driving down for the Induction days, which is something else to worry about

Stirling is a lovely University. I always feel it's so clean and fresh for some reason and Stirling is close enough on the motorway for visits whenever you feel the need. What course is he going to study? My husband does the opposite journey to you. He parks at Stirling Station, gets the train to work in Edinburgh and in comparison to doing a similar length journey down south, he says the scenery is lovely and very relaxed!

Best of wishes,

Becka

I know, it's a gorgeous campus and the surrounding countryside is lovely 8) .

He's studying Computer Science (and one of his first year lecturers is married to a forum member  ).

I had a call last night saying he'd met the people he's sharing with and they were going out to a freshers event 8) . I then had a call from his pocket - he really must learn to lock his phone  . I'm resisting the urge to text him to check he's up in time to go to his "welcome" lecture at 11.30am :) .

OH is passing Stirling this afternoon on the way back from a hill race so is popping in with all the stuff we forgot yesterday  .

It will be next year for me (if DS doesn't have a gap year). We are looking round unis at the moment. I imagine it will fly by, as the last 18 years seem to have done.

Me too Debbier.

The daughter seems to change her mind every few days as the whether she wants to go the Uni or take a year out,& if she does take a year out, what she is going to do.

She still doesn't know what she wants to study or is looking at for a profession either.

Is that UCL (or Imperial?) have friends going so have heard all about it 8)

Me + friends went to Ikea in the week + got most things, still loads of stuff to get ... esp a bottle opener ;)

One thing everyone said was to not get a cheapo frying pan!

Excited to get there, meet everyone + start the course, but at the same time don't feel old enough to live 3 + half hours away from home and am bit nervous about not knowing anyone there.

At the end of the day we're all in the same boat! :D

You are only an hour and a half from your adopted Welsh family honey :D

You know that Phil and my door is open to you anytime

Exciting times :P ah I remember the excitement of going to Uni like it was yesterday...... Was it really 18 years ago  I want a recount

Hope everyone who is going settles in well, and that the parents adapt  Just make sure you keep up to date with your washing at home..... You never know when the next few sack fulls could arrive

He is exactly the same. It's a big decision, and will need taking all too soon. I'm hoping that he'll get some inspiration from looking at the universities and what's on offer. It's not easy, especially when he has to focus on getting decent grades in his A2s.

And don't forget I'll be living either on campus (probably going to be in Penbryn for a while...but that's a whole other rant!) or down in town, so you'll know (well, "know" from this forum) someone there already! :)
