Iceland

Recommended Posts

I have been so busy I haven't posted for a while. Lots of things happening, but one of them was a fantastic holiday to Iceland! We spent a week in the South and South East of Iceland and just had the most fabby time.

We saw the aurora, we walked up the terminal moraine and right up to the edge of a glacier, took a boat trip among the icebergs on a glacial lagoon (they were the size of large houses!), and best of all, spent all our Christmas money and had a helicopter trip over the volcano that caused all the bother earlier this year - still steaming! Our hotel had a hot tub on the terrace outside our room, and we could sit out there in the evening in the hot water with icicles in our hair.

It is a stunningly beautiful country, and I'd definitely go again. Just need to save the pennies.

I have a couple of photo albums on Facebook - but they are public, so you won't need to be a member to see them! These are the best 100 or so of nearly 2000 photos that I took!

Alis Girls - it isn't too expensive once you get there, honestly! The food in restaurants is a bit more expensive than back home, but then they have to import a lot of it. But all the tourist attractions have free entry unless you are taking a guided excursion, and even then they have free visitor centres with interpretive boards and AV presentations. You don't have to pay even for car parking. A school trip will have all the excursions built in to the cost, and the transport as well. Things like Snickers bars are still only 100kr/50p out there, and if you eat a huge cooked breakfast then you don't really need much lunch!

We hired a car, and you really do need a 4 x 4 so it was more expensive than hiring a little hatchback - but a lot of the roads are only gravel roads, and you need a high clearance 4 x 4 to go on the forded roads up into the hills. But hiring a car means you can get to places that the tourist buses tend to drive past, and often they are lovely places.

We did this for Stephen's 50th - I'd say 18 months is enough to save up :) The choice of hotels is greater in summer than winter but actually October is a great time - it is quieter, it is still above freezing some of the time, and the attractions are mainly still open. Plus you get the aurora which you don't get in the summer because of the midnight sun.

Thank you for the compliments about the photos - it is hard NOT to take good photos there - it is such a beautiful place.
