ChrisP
I was hoping someone here would have the answer to this question... how many times do you have to have tonsillitis before you can think about getting them removed?
Snowy
I think it has to really incapacitate you these days, it's not something they do lightly as your tonsils help to fight infection.
ChrisP
It's quite common for me to get it, and I've had it seriously 4 times this year so far, and this last time, the standard antibiotics didnt work, so after a week on them, and getting worse, I was the put on double strength ones, and mouth rinse etc and fainting from it etc. Each time seems to be about a week off work etc. I was just wondering whether it's worth exploring this idea, or to just carry on and hope I stop getting them? Snowy
I think you definitely need to talk to them about it. If it's that bad they may be willing to consider it. I get it badly on occasion, but go long periods between when it is OK. Never been as bad as you though Hope they can give you some relief. Rhapsody
I've had tonsilitus about a million times, antibiotics just made it come back stronger. I suck Neurofen Meltlets slowly for the pain and rest. TBH I'd say you need to get off the anti-b's as they are making the situation worse, ride out one attack without and see if your resistance starts to build up. Tiggy
locally the ENT lot say 5 proven episodes of tonsilitis in 12 months before they consider taking them out, having the op is not nice and often your immune system will eventually fight off the bug for you so most adults dont get it. chickencam
I feel for you, tonsilitis is painful and makes you feel so ill. I had it a lot when i was younger and again when my children were small. I think that it is a sign that you are generally run down, I have never had an attack when I have been been well and stress free. Make sure that you get plenty of sleep and are eating well and I agree with the others, as you get older your body will fight the infection much better and it is beneficial to keep your tonsils if you can. I hope that you feel better soon.
Seagazer
My DD used to suffer terribly with tonsillitis, numerous attacks each year. Once she was nearly hospitalized with a quincey (sp?). Even then the gp didn't want to do anything but school were getting fed up with her missing so much. In the end we went privately and the consultant said that she had horribly scarred tonsils and should have had them out much earlier. You might have to try to insist on seeing an ENT consultant as the gp will probably say no. Edited to add: I used to get it a lot as a child and my gp always said to my mum 'if she gets it again then we'll whip them out' but they never did. I've probably only had it once or twice in the last ten years so you do seem to grow out of it, eventually!
Blackrocksrock
I was more often off from school one year that I was at school so in the end they took mine out - success when I was in primary 5 it was and no problems at all since then. They took them out earlier in those days but I had been bothered for years!
Rhapsody
Forgot to add -they grow back this happened to my OH who was gobsmacked when the doc told him that he had tonsilitus- he had them out when he was a boy!
Geoid
They are not meant to grow back! Did you know, they use a laser to remove tonsils and your throat is sore for ages after.
Egluntyne
Forgot to add -they grow back this happened to my OH who was gobsmacked when the doc told him that he had tonsilitus- he had them out when he was a boy! I have had exactly this experience, and developed a quinsy a couple of years ago. Not funny.
sadietoo
I was more often off from school one year that I was at school so in the end they took mine out - success when I was in primary 5 it was and no problems at all since then. They took them out earlier in those days but I had been bothered for years! I was beginning to think I was the only one on here that had had my tonsils removed (along I believe with my adenoids). I'd had repeated bouts of tonsilitis and was taken in to hospital on 5th November 1962 (aged 7) for the dastardly deed to be done (at short notice...they were that horrible!!) . I think I spent about three days in hospital, and my mother conceded me another week off school afterwards. I'd missed loads of school and was always ill before, but I never looked back after. ...isn't it funny how what was (almost) routine then is frowned upon today, and yet anecdotedly at least, loads of people who had their tonsils out were much better after!!! If they are really really causing you a problem, I'd try and get rid if you can....it probably can't be any worse than the way you are feeling now!! Hope you get it sorted soonx
Angie
Yes Fred i know, i had mine out three years ago at the age of fifty......something. I have suffered with recurrent tonsilitis on and off most of my life, until i was dyspa.....unable to swallow,i was admitted with ulcerated tonsils and it was the worst thing i have ever had. When able to talk i demanded they were taken out and the consultant agreed but warned me i would be ill for a few weeks ......up to six. I was too! My GP had refused to treat me insisting it was a 24hr virus, went every day asking for antibiotics until the 6 th day when i drove myself to A&E where i was admitted and having IV drugs within half an hour. Ask GP for a referral and take it from there....sssoooo glad i had mine out.
