Torrential rain and very gusty gales this morning and dark too 10.9deg, so not at all cold, but rather like being in a washing machine out there. The wind gusts are stronger than I've ever seen - my neighbours across the road are having to physically hold their summer house down as it keeps trying to lift off. Next door has lost 3 tiles and half their guttering. Our house is actually shuddering in the gusts and the shed keeps lifting up but thankfully going nowhere. The WIR roof is holding - for now . Half of covered run blown away and broken, whilst trying to repair it we noticed a massive poplar tree rocking from its roots - got three of the chickens in and then the tree came down smashing the Solway with two of the girls still in it. Scrabbled under the tree and after an awful ten minutes found the girls alive under the wreck, managed to drag them out, now all girls in cat baskets indoors. Don't know what we're going to do as electric fence under tree. We have an eglu but nowhere to put it at the moment plus it's in the polytunnel which has been damaged by a boundary wall which has fallen onto it so we can't open the doors. Currently on hold to insurance company and in shock as OH was by tree when it came down. Think I'm going off to have a good cry now before sense kicks in. I can imagine how bad it is up there, there are trees down etc here now, dark as anything and the office next door's big iron gate has swung off its hinges. Sounds like it is terrible in Scotland - I though ti was bad here, never seen wind and rain like it What a change from yesterday - took the boys and dogs to the park, it was glorious. Space Chick Posted January 3, 2012 Share Posted January 3, 2012 We've lost several tarps off the WIRs and part of the roof on WIR1, the glass recycling bin has blown away leaving jars and bottles down the cul de sac, and my garden gate and fence it's attached to are missing, gone! All this carnage has been witnessed from indoors as I have a severe viral chest infection, and am on total rest and a heavy dose of steroids. OH is in work, and left while it was still dark. Just been on the phone to the friendly neighbourhood handyman who is coming up later to see what he can do. Hope the wind is abating and you are getting somewhere with insurance, thank goodness you are all safe. It is certainly less intense here, obviously heading east Trains have been disrupted here. Haven't ventured further than garden to sort the animals so no idea if trees are down ANH - Stay in! SC - Hope you get things sorted and you feel much better soon. OH repaired it on Saturday and I am scared to venture outside to see if it is OK. The wind is whistling through keyholes so I have bunged them up with toilet paper. Weirdly the wind is also whistling through a few electrical sockets How is that happening? It is making the cottage quite cold. Lights keep flashing so I have filled flasks with hot water just in case the power goes. Sky TV keeps freezing and we have no radio reception. Candles and torches are ready again. The neighbours' summerhouse appears to be staying put now but my driveway is littered with next door's roof tiles . Amazed that the highest gust of 102mph was recorded right where we live . Simon was the only one to venture out to clear up the street, tho; Our neighbour's trampoline travelled across the garden & got lodged in the roof of her ground floor extension, thankfully getting stuck like that stopped it going straight thro' her floor to ceiling windows .
