Charlottechicken
My dear grandson was helping OH feed and water the animals earlier and decided to lick a metal gate - his tongue stuck to it Eek It was -10 here this morning and I had to s"Ooops, word censored!"e the inside of the car again. We've had below freezing temperatures all day, and now we have fog Hens are fed up and just perching all day. My mum kindly came round at about 11am to check their water, it was frozen solid and she had to just add some fresh water over the top as the drinker was frozen up (Eltex metal drinker). Snowy
Sorry Lesley, had to laugh at Jake - reminds me of our grandson who did the same, but licked one of the freezer baskets and his tongue stuck! His Mum leapt into action - and grabbed the camera
Lesley
Boys! We have 6 of those drinkers Claire and have the same problem, have to pour hot water in twice a day. If you only have one or two you can make an open base with three bricks and put a tealight in the middle, under the drinker. The bricks make sure the chickens can't reach the tealight. The Dogmother
I've managed to keep mine free of ice with a couple of snugglesafes, which I reheated at lunchtime. It's -6 out there already!
Valkyrie
@ silly boys! Priceless. Rather odd today, the car registered minus 2 first thing and then a high of 7 until I drove along the road and it got gradually colder. I think the heat from where I used the car earlier was interfering a bit with the gauge. Mainly it was plus 2 and then it went back to zero after all the ice and snow was melting. No sign of gritters, so reckon lots of black ice tonight.
Charlottechicken
Took my camera into work as yesterday the sky was beautiful. Not so nice today but you can see the cold! View from my desk, on a clear day we can see Clent to the right and the new QE hospital is there somewhere as well.

chickencam
Sorry to hear that Egluntyne. On the subject of freezing onto things, my fingers stuck to the hook that I use to hold up the pop hole door on my wooden house this morning, they were damp because I had just brought their water out it gave me quite a start. Paola
My dear grandson was helping OH feed and water the animals earlier and decided to lick a metal gate - his tongue stuck to it Fantastic I am loving the pics guys My car said that it was 28 degrees this morning
The Dogmother
I could go off you Paola! The temp went up last night from -4deg to -1 in the space of two hours and it clouded over. No snow though. It has just started to snow here now though -0.5deg and still chilly.
Old Speckled Hen
-6˚ overnight. Bright and sunny. It's dazzling. Had to wear sun glasses doggie walking this morning. Sitting by the fire wrapping christmas presents now. Do you think it's too early for a Baileys
Seagazer
My mum popped round to bring YS's birthday card and skidded at the top of my road, she nearly went into the kerb. She was really shocked when she came in. She had a nasty crash a couple of years ago when she skidded on ice. Bless her I told her not to worry about coming over. Blackrocksrock
Huh, Won't walk in the snow but happy to perch in a tree. ][/url] Hope I can get them down later [/quote Love it - reminds me of the night I forgot till late to shut mine in and when I went out 1 hen on the back doorstep which I picked up to see what was wrong - nothing visible - went to put into eglu run and the door had shut - stuck her in and checked - no others in there - we had to search the garden - 1 found in the shed and the third no where to be found - we eventually found her frantic search going on - on a branch which could barely bear her weight and was way low down with her perched on the end of it! dont you love em
Old Speckled Hen
Been there........lost count of the number of times I've had hubby out scrambling in the flower beds, torch in hand. Blackrocksrock
They have not been out of the eglu for 2 weeks today I think - it is starting to pong a bit and I cannot move the run just clean out the nest box and tray through the port hole and staolsan what I can but... someone said today it will be here till middle february in which case I will have to do something else for them poor things. They have plenty food and water and treats as not laying after a moult but what can we do
Old Speckled Hen
The poo in the run is frozen solid. Have picked some out but hey, it's too cold. My fingers stuck on the cube when I opened it this morning. I will have to get in there real quick when it does thaw. I've taken the plastic roosting bars out and substituted a couple of wooden perches, they're happier with them. I can just take them out, replace the newspaper lining the poo trays and hey presto they are clean again. Plenty of straw in the nest box which is where all six of them are sleeping. Roll on spring
Daphne
Awaiting the photo of you up the tree after them OSH No weather to speak of here now. Even got above freezing today. Keep safe everybody.

If you only have one or two you can make an open base with three bricks and put a tealight in the middle, under the drinker. The bricks make sure the chickens can't reach the tealight. Funny you should mention it Lesley, my mum does that for the wild bird's water and bath! The eglu and food/water are actually in a clear corrugated plastic and wood frame shed though, not sure I would comfortably leave a naked flame in there. Chickens are actually not even outside at the mo, even though the run has clear tarps over it, and a fence to one side. We have a lovely sunset at the moment, but it's getting windy, and we are forecast very low temperatures. It was warmer today though (didn't get past freezing but it was warmer!), I didn't have to s"Ooops, word censored!"e the car this morning Hope those of you with severe weather conditions stay safe and get some respite soon!
