Teacher problem...

Recommended Posts

My daughter is concerned as this teacher marks all her GCSE Diploma work.......................

As part of your complaint i'd request that your daughters work is blind second marked because clearly the judgement of the teacher where you daughter is concerened is clearly questionable.

I really can't understand what on earth this teacher is playing at. Academic records are private and disipline comes into that. Good luck with yoru meeting i hope you wipe the floor with them :)

Good luck - one of ES's friends teachers sits with notebook and pen ready till he talks in class then gives him detention - this was brought up at parents evening by friend and his mum. I mean she cant be teaching if shes waitng to catch him out. I am not down on teachers there are some brilliant ones out there but this one needs taking in hand.

Yes, good luck today. I would be fuming too, I would expect my children to be held accountable for their actions but to be treated fairly and appropriately. This teacher appears to be acting less of a responsible adult than the pupils she is responsible for. :( I hope you can get it sorted x

I actually think this is too serious to be discussed via email. I would phone to arrange a meeting with the 'Head' of this college and lodge a formal complaint. How does your daughter feel about how you deal with it? Most teenagers cridge at the thought of their parents getting involved. It is important to make sure that she is OK with how you choose to deal with it.

I couldn't agree more, this has been dealt with in a very unprofessional manner, and, as such, sets a bad example to the students.

The student's comment about the teacher mentioning the wearing on uniform is hearsay (I'm not saying that it wasn't said) so perhaps best left out of the matter for now.

as everyone else has said, this is beyond outrageous. is there history between this teacher and Cleo? (not meaning that Cleo is naughty, just does the teacher have a downer on her generally?)

I would take someone along with you to the meeting as moral support; and also make detailed notes of what you believe happened when, what was said etc etc, whether hearsay or not. forewarned is forearmed and all that. and also take notes at the meeting yourself - at this stage I think it wont be formal enough for the school to do that, so make sure you write down what is said, what action they will take etc.

all the very best.

Typically the head is off sick today, but is aware of the problem & wants to deal with it herself rather than leave it to a deputy,so she will be getting back to me when she is well

That's very frustrating for you, but at least it sounds as though the head is taking it seriously, which has to be a good sign? Hope you can get it sorted.

Uuurm, Christmas holidays starting soon so is she hoping you forget about it. Not that I'm suspicious!

This is appalling.

Before you see the Head, sarah, I would recommend that you write down succinctly what you want to cover, to make sure that emotion doesn't get in the way.

It seems to me that there are two separate and distinct things that you want to have investigated.

1) The teacher reading out an email to your Cleo's class, without Cleo being present and without having tackled Cleo about the matter first.

2) The way the teacher has handled your initial complaint.

Supplementary to this, and which should be brought up later in the discussion perhaps is theteachers comment about forcing Cleo to wear school uniform, which indicates she has perhaps has a bigger issue with Cleo. This, along with the first matter and now your subsequent complaint, makes you feel very uncomfortable that this person is marking Cleo's work. You'd like it independantly marked instead or as well.

You should also think about what you want the outcome to be, and plan your strategy accordingly. For example, it seems to me that it would be appropriate for the teacher to apologise to Cleo in front of the Class for handling the complain in the way she did. As someone who should be setting an example of good behaviour, the teacher should say that it would have been more appropriate to discuss the matter with Cleo first.

Before going in, make sure Cleo has told you absolutely EVERYTHING, and that there isn't anything she has now remembered that may put a different light on things. She needs to understand that if you are going in to bat for her, you need to know everything so there are no surprises.

Good luck, I hope that you get this resolved.

Something that has surprised me is that the school know about the issue (not sure if its the email reading out bit,or about Cleos behaviour issue),but they have already spoken to the teacher in question.

As she did not respond to my last email to her,I can only assume that she has gone to the head herself to put her case forward before I did.......

I suspect she has not mentioned the reading out of the email & wonder whether she will deny it when I speak to the Head next week?

TBH the behaviour issue is almost secondary now. Its her word against mine & my daughters (plus several people who were at the event!)

I am more concerned about the way she has handled her problem with Cleo, especially the reading out of the email, which I think is totally unjustifiable.

She was there.

Let me explain a bit..........................

The girls had to go the the Henley Christmas market to sell things they had made for charity. It was a bitter night,so they did 'shifts' Cleo did from 5 - 7.30, & after that met with her friends, whose parents took them out for supper at Zizzi :D

Now, Cleo went & set the stall up,worked on it for a half hour or so,then went around the market telling people about the stall firstly with other pupils, then on her own. I have had it verified by friends who were there & also by her pals mum that she didn't meet her friends until 7.30,if not later.

BUT, when she did meet them, they went to Starbucks to warm up, & another girl saw them & reported back that Cleo had been there the entire time.

Stupidly Cleo didn't think to tell the teacher when her shift ended at 7.30 that she was going, but she did tell her stall partner. However this girl was off sick on Wednesday,so this couldn't be checked.

The teacher has basically said that Cleo did no work on the stall & was off with her mates all evening. She also said that she was worried & phoned Cleos mobile at 9.30 to check where she was. She did get this phone call................the teacher asked her if she was home AND THANKED HER FOR HER HARD WORK!!!!!

As I said before,I am not bothered about the teachers claims. I know Cleo worked the market, telling people to visit the stall because several people I know have told me that she approached them.

I also know that she didn't meet her pal Maddie until after 7.30,because I phoned her Mum & asked what time they got there.

I am more angry about they reading out of the email, the fact that it was sent before she had spoken to Cleo & before speaking to Cleos stall mate who knew where Cleo was & what she was doing,& the fact that she has obviously listened to this other child (needless to say,her & Cleo do not get along) & taken her tale as red.

Oh, & as an aside I lent them 3 strings of battery operated fairly lights, which cost me £5 each & 2 came back with the wires pulled out, almost intentionally.....................

Cinnamon, I think Witchhazel's advice is spot on.

Write down what your key points are, and stick to them. It sounds as though the school may try to steer the discussion to the original event, - when it's much more how the allegations against Chloe were dealt with. Sounds as though this teacher is struggling anyway so the head may have had other incidents like this. Good luck !

Just heard from the Head.

As I suspected she thought I was phoning up to bat for Cleo in this,& was pretty astounded by what I told her.

She has promised to speak to the class & get to the bottom of what was & what was not said.

She also apologised & said that no one, pupil, staff member or parent, should be treated in such a thoughtless way, whatever the reason.

She is in London for a conference today, but back in school tomorrow, then they break up at midday on Friday,so I hope she has some news for me by then :)
