Alis girls
No not the bodily ones - today in work we were gassed (no exagerration) by the stench of mothballs - campor I think they contain - someone must have a wardrobe full - made me cough and the head receptionist finally opened all the doors so not only did we have breathing difficulties but ran the risk of a chill too. I suspect all sensible moths would wear gas masks. Its normally the elderly patients who use them in large amounts. The other that takes my breath away is "Deep Heat" - ES came in some months back from footie and I said without turning round "whatcha done now" - he looked astounded and told me he had sprained or twisted his ankle so they had sprayed it. wheeze wheeze
Cinnamon
I hate & detest the smell of the Lees Stafford hair styling range - the one in the hot pink packaging. I used to quite like it,but after being almost asphyxiated by the fumes in my daughters room,I can now no longer smell it without gagging,& I have had to find her alternative products to use. Egluntyne
I can't abide the smell of New West, Red Door or Anais Anais perfumes. The latter makes me feel quite ill.

bluekarin
I cannot stand blue Lenor fabric conditioner. Went off it when I had morning sickness and the smell makes me want to spew even now Same with blue Flash household cleaner. It was used to clean the house we are in now as the previous tenant (our landlord) had never cleaned the kitchen I don't think. Now if I smell it, it doesn't make think ahhh sea breeze, it makes me think urgh dirty kitchen Love Obsession though
sari
I also hate really heavily scented Laundry products, they make me wheezy and headachey, and YD has eczema and asthma now, and know that it irritates her too. So I don't use them obviously I hate strong perfumes, espesh Red Door..and my sister wears a SJP one that makes me gag. My OH says I have an over developed sense of smell, beacuse I can smell things he can't, like a mouldy banana in the bottom of a school bag, 2 rooms away.... Cinnamon
Funny that - my husband often says the same to me. I can smell things that he can't,& I can smell smells stronger too. I don't like scented laundry thingys either - they always seem to smell heavy & fake floral to me.
Alis girls
My son got a Lynx spray for Christmas - my OH calls it "the smell of teenage desperation" meaning anyone wearing is desparate for a mate. Blimey
Olly
I can't bear plug-in air fresheners, not sure which one is the worst but there's one particular brand that makes me want to heave. Generally I have a poor sense of smell, sometimes I can't smell anything at all, but I can always smell those horrible things!
The Dogmother
Men have a far less sensitive sense of smell than us. I have recently been house/cat-minding for a neighbour who has been away; they believe in lots of plug-in air freshners rather than opening windows so I had to turn them all off while I was looking after the house. Banbury is home to Europe's biggest coffee processing plant (Kraft Jacobs Suchard)- known locally as 'huff puff' as it sometimes makes a dragon roar and belches steam - on good days the town is suffused by the aroma of roasting coffee, but one part of the process smells like cabbage soup - not so nice. One advantage is that you can easily tell if the wind is in the north and it will be cold when you can quite literally wake up and smell the coffee! CatieB
Such odd timing for this topic as DH says I've become obsessed by smells recently. Like others I can smell certain niffs at a hundred paces. Someone at my slimming world meeting this week definately had deep heat (or similar) on them! Unfortunately my job tends to mean I come into contact with the riper part of the community, I am sure I met the worlds heaviest smoker recently who insisted on talking to me at length but with every word he said I coughed as the stench was so bad. I wasn't being a princess my reaction was totally involantary, the smoke seemed to invade every single part of him. YUK YUK YUK

Oooooo when we drove there, it smelt of marmite/twiglets!! mmmmm I can imagine it getting quite horrible when it is nasty things like Cabbage soup - not what you really want to smell first thing in the morning!! My OH, when we first started living together, would try and sneak them into the house and hide them, as for some reason he thought they were great. I would smell them and hunt them out within minutes!
Eggasperated
When I was little (a long long time ago ) my Mum always wore Tweed as her 'going out' perfume, unfortunately this usually coincided with me being car sick so eventually as soon as she sprayed her perfume I started to feel . To this day she still doesn't believe me and thinks I was making a fuss about nothing.

Egluntyne
Mentioned this thread at work and we were unanimous that Estee Lauder's Youth Dew (can you still buy it? ) was the vilest cheap flowery stench that blighted all our childhoods. Our mothers all used it, along with Max Factor Capistrano (sp?) Pink lippy and Pond's Cold Cream.
Alis girls
Wonder what our kids will remember smell wise about us. i like the Dove pro age stuff - doesnt really smell that much - perfume I go on and off scents.
JillM
Anyone remember 4711 perfume? I saw it around again not long ago, my mum always wore it...probably because as kids we could afford to buy it in those really tiny bottles for Mother's Day and Birthdays. What Mum's will put up with, just because the children have bought it, eh?
bluekarin
I love 4711! My mum used to wear it and there was one year that us kids ages were the 4 7 and 11 I bought a solid stick of it recently in the Boots sale and its quite a cooling refreshing smell. Makes me think of summer
