chickencam
I had a television evening yesterday, with this followed by the programme about the moon. It was pretty obvious from the start which couple were going home, I got a vision of my two daughters trying to work together I enjoyed the programme, it will be interesting to watch it unfold over the next few weeks. Bramble
I really enjoyed it too, tho I'm not sure how much the winning couple will be able to do with a farm if they only win it for a year (or have I got the wrong end of the stick?) No one opted for chucks though, they must be missing a trick there?
Margalot
I enjoyed it too! How lucky was that! - the fireman being on hand at the farm when the fire broke out! And those two sisters!... all they did was argue, that was never going to work out. I loved the goats, I think after chickens, which would have been my first choice obviously I would have gone for goats! and the allotment idea was good, but didnt look as if they had put any work in did it? they could have at least made an effort with a sample one I also liked the guy who was in tears after being so proud of his wife ploughing the field
chickric
We enjoyed it as well and weren't surprised at who went, will be interesting to follow. C&T
I enjoyed it - although agree about the sisters... They were NEVER going to work together!! Do think a few went for Pigs because of Jimmy - though am surprised no-one went for the Chickens for eggs and meat - especially if the soil wasn't very "nutritious" - chooks would have helped that no problem! Thought there were some clever ideas - but be interesting to see how the program develops - hope it has some real substance to it!
chickencam
I suspect that none of them went for chickens because they were mainly from towns and probably saw this as a good opportunity to get larger lifestock experience. If I were them I wouldn't have gone for pigs, because that is Jimmy's area and he will be extra critical I should think.
Old Speckled Hen
Thanks Chickric for the link. Mmmmmmmmm where did they get the contestants? None of them seem to have any idea about stock or land management so I guess it's another dross reality show picking people most likely to make a hash of it and produce our entertainment. There will somewhere be one couple who DO know what they are doing (though we do not yet know who they are but I'm sure the producers do) and will be "The Winners".Maybe the airey fairey two with their rented allotments? I'd like the older couple to win but I suspect they won't be able to hack the physical work......who knows? Jimmy Docherty is a nice lad but I think he's selling himself down the river with this one. He's just having a laugh at every body. I quite enjoyed it though Actually, abandon the program, give me the land Just those bits they are playing with will do.
ubereglu
It was interesting, but I don't see how Jimmy Doherty is the best judge for it though, after all he only made his farm pay as the BBC were paying him to make a series, otherwise he would (and in my opinion, deserved) to go under. Cinnamon
Thats a bit of a sweeping statement,Liz I don't think anyone deserves to go under, really And especially not a farmer. And who else could host it....at least he has experience of all aspects of farming, including the financial ones.
Sam
I also thought that about the prize. Seems a bit strange giving your life up just for a year on a farm, unless they could afford the upkeep and make a profit. Again, you could tell the sisters would go Can't remember their names, but the brunette was just counting seeds out, and the blonde started having a go at her!! Poor woman!! Thought the fire scene was , lucky no animals were in the shed/barn!

However I know people who have been in farming and what they've experienced, including some INCREDIBLY dark times, and to suddenly go, oh, I'll set up a farm with no experience and stressing out your animals by not knowing what you're doing is a bad idea. When he first started he was making it out to be an easy task as he hadn't a clue, which farming certainly isn't. My brother's mate Phil is the son of an ex-pig farmer, (his dad had to see all of his animals slaughtered during the foot and mouth crisis of 2001), was rather tempted to throw things at the TV when he first started. I agree, it is another 'reality' show .........I can't believe how unprepared all the contestants were, they must have know what they were going in for? I have to partially agree with Liz about Jimmy as well - although no-one deserves to go under I don't think he would have made it without BBC money. He also appears to have a very short and selective memory - this was the man who had most of us shouting when all his hens were killed by a fox so he just went and bought more and whose pigs all escaped..........both incidents because he hadn't got the common sense to put up decent stock fencing in the first place! I think the fire scene was very odd - it was almost as if it had been staged....the fire engine came around a blind bend in a village and swung straight into the farmyard which couldn't be seen from the road - anyone could have been standing just inside the gates.... I like Jimmy and we'll carry on watching just for the laugh.......
Cinnamon
I like Jimmy and we'll carry on watching just for the laugh....... Me too! I think he is a hard worker as well as an endearing host,so good luck to him. His other shows wouldn't have been very interesting if everything went right...... As I said before,I would be hard pushed to think of anyone more suited to host this show, really
TheGirlsMum
We enjoyed the entertainment, couldn't believe they hadn't done their homework to read up on fencing. The couple that went for the goats watched the one clear the gate easily and then they put them in their paddock with very low electric fencing We are about to install some stock fencing for pigs, doesn't look like we are going to be shown how to do it, does it? Only how not to. Can't believe none of them went for chickens and where were their animal shelters? Last question.....why did they all plough down the hill rather than across The sisters were definitely the right ones to go first.

It's nothing to do with farming at all. All the contestants are clueless for a reason.....bar one couple I would hazard. It's a reality show where we,the viewers, can indulge in ....."oh how stupid!!! I could do better than that blindfolded, Where do these people get their ideas from? Why aren't they doing? For heaven's sake!!!!" It's entertainment and yes folks...........no animals were hurt in this production And I must agree, that fire. well PLEASE

chickencam
I agree that without the BBC JImmy would have struggled with his own venture, but in some ways that makes him very well qualified for his involvment in this project, because he has a great insight into the pitfalls and the amounts of work needed to succeed. tom123
Not too sure what to make of this program Personally, I think it's a shame that they picked the clueless couples for entertainment who will almost definitely not succeed if they win whereas they could have picked couples who know what they are doing and would make the most of it and actually do well out of it. I think the prize will be wasted personally The fencing was hilarious though I felt sorry for the blonde sister, her sister was making an absolute mess of that electric fencing, where an earth was she going with it??!! How is it harder to go in a straight line if you start with 2 ends then follow the tape? Voila, straight line And the 'know-it-all' guy who did the stock fencing? Tree stakes! Tree stakes! To tension the fence he used Tree Stakes!! Bit of a joke really. Oh and the couple that used the logs as fence posts, was anyone else shouting at the TV when he couldn't work out why there wasn't a current running through the tape? Uhh maybe because you've just wrapped it around a metal screw Then feed sacks wrapped round it! Would have saved a lot more time just buying the purpose made insulator screws. The only people who I think are in for a chance of winning are the older couple. They seem quite knowledgeable. Should be entertaining to watch just a shame that they had to pick a bunch of numptys! There is probably one able couple placed in the middle of, as you say, the remaining numpties.
