Hayfever anyone?

Recommended Posts

For a few years now I seem to have been free of hayfever apart from the odd day. This year for the last week or so my nose has been waking me up at 4 and going on till lunchtime - which is what it used to do - so far it hasn't returned in the evening. Anybody else been having trouble yet? I actually took some tablets yesterday because it was being such a nuisance. :boohoo:

I wonder if we'll have a hot and dry summer then? Oi! Pick yourselves up off the floor before you injure yourselves laughing too hard.

OK just in case - time to start filling those water butts before the hosepipe ban! Am I being too optimistic do you think?

my eyes have been very itchy the last couple of weeks.. :?

Mine too... they've never bothered me this early in the year before!

Just slightly changing the subject, but does anybody else on here have 'Oral Allergy Syndrome'?

I get a sore, itchy mouth after eating certain fruits and tomatoes... pineapple is the main culprit, which causes my lips to swell up in a trout pouty fashion  ! They are all foods that I love, so I eat them anyway, but have been told that because of this, I may have a latex allergy, which means I have to make doctors & dentists aware of it.

I was trawling around on wikipedia the other night and found an article about it (I'd never put a name to it before), saying that lots of hayfever sufferers have this same reaction to certain foods... I'd never put the two together until then!

Re the oral food allergy, Yep my children both have allergies to different fruits! strange ones too! My daughter is severly allergic to kiwi fuit and this will make her throat really itchy immediatley, and she comes out in hives around her lips and on the outside of her neck! so we avoid that like the plague. melon and pear just maked their lips itchy, tomatoes used to bring hives around their lips, of and my son gets a really itchy mouth with bananas!, but they are fine with oranges pineapple strawberries etc, oh and peas/ baked beans and mushrooms with my son, so we are a real mix and match bunch (they do carry epipens as they are both allergic to nuts) ED can eat peanuts but not tree nuts, and YS avoids all nuts! also eggs........the list goes on and on!! I had never heard of the latex link though! so will look into that one. When we get a reaction we have to whittle down everything! nightmare!

Yes there's been a lot of sneezing going on in this household, YS sounds permanently blocked up. Time to start the tablets again. I'm going to go to the farm shop too to try local honey for him this year.

YS also has the oral fruit allergy thing, he's dreadful with pineapple and kiwi although he does still like to eat it occasionally. He's also not got very good skin, not eczema so much as very pimply, rough skin on his face and top of his arms and prone to getting a rash at a drop of a hat.

DD seems to have this problem with alcohol  (she is 23) Archers makes her lips swell. We had a bottle of red wine once (well not just once but on this occasion :lol: ) and you could actually see her lips go swollen and she became quite breathless. A anti-histamine sorted her out then but she did go for allergy testing but they said it was very hard to tell what it could be, they only tested all the normal sorts of things. I think it was probably the tannin.

Yup, me too for the hayfever. Have been taking the tabs all week. I'm sure I don't remember it being so early before.

Ha ha to the water butt comment, the pipe to one of mine slipped and it actually overflowed recently - what a waste! I'll probably be eating my words come mid-July (I can dream...)

Hmmmm, this has made me think.

About ten days ago I suddenly erupted in scratch-yourself-raw itchy hives, started on ankles & feet but soon spread everywhere. I've been taking serious amounts of antihistamines and it is subsiding thankfully. I'm wondering what I have reacted to, as I have never had an allergy in my life until now - I wonder if there have been especially high levels of pollens or spores this last couple of weeks that are causing all this misery.

I think I've been on the verge of either hayfever or cat allergy (I really hope not  ) as I've been feeling as though I'm permanently coming down with a cold. Dave, my cat, licked my face the other day and the roof of my mouth went immediately itchy. I shouldn't be surprised really with the kids being so sensitive to so many things.

I'm thinking of having an allergy test done, with the cats in mind, as then I will make sure they don't go into my bedroom (which they do at the moment).

I have had a few sneezes this week now you come to mention it.

I have been taking daily antihistamine since last year when I kept getting "Mick Jagger on botox" reactions to something :eh: - still don't know what as the tests have been inconclusive. The meds may have meant that I am not reacting as badly as usual

Well I've been a bit snuffly lately, thought I might be getting a cold - but you're right, it's tree pollen season!

Groovychook, I too have OAS - didn't know what it was till I Googled it a couple of years ago. I never had hayfever as a child, but I developed it in my 30s, and then gradually discovered that eating apples made my mouth itch. According to what I've read, OAS is linked to an allergy to birch pollen. I now can't eat any fruit with skin - I'm ok with grapes, but anything else has to be peeled or cooked. Even strawberries and tomatoes sometimes do it, although I continue to eat them 'cos I love them. It does also depend on how ripe the fruit is. I only ever eat satsumas/bananas these days, I woud love to bite into a nice crispy apple. :(

I didn't know it could be linked to latex allergy, that's interesting - as far as I'm aware I don't have that. I am allergic to lanolin though, and if I ever feel the need for a trout pout all I'll have to do is buy a certain brand of lip salve!

I would love to eat a crisp Granny Smith apple, but haven't been able to since I was 10 :( Kiwi is one of the worst for me, so like you Olly, I stick to bananas, satsumas. Strawberries and blueberries are fine, but no pears, peaches, cherries etc etc.

Never knew that it had a name, will have to go to the Doctor's now and get an allergy test done.

 And I'll reach for a pineapple! Eat your heart out Angelina Jolie

Banana's are a fruit that have a big effect on me and avocado is one of the worst! I love them though, so often tuck in... a lovely salad with avocado and tomatoes makes my mouth & throat itch like mad

I bought a ready prepared fruit salad with pineapple, strawberries, apple & kiwi the other day- knowing that it would be a painful experience but I couldn't resist! Sometimes it's worth suffering a little to have a treat :)

Another thing I have to be careful with is chopping and frying raw chillies- they give off a vapour which literally takes my breath away. I'm only mildly asthmatic- rarely have any problems with it, but chillies trigger an instant attack

Ahhh, I wondered why I had been sneezing so much this last week!:lol:

I have very mild hayfever, it used to be far worse as a child but I've largely grown out of it. Just a few sneezes nowadays and thankfully not bad enough to need antihistamines.

MIL has oral allergy syndrome. She can't eat apples, they make her mouth very itchy and dry. I believe apples are linked to silver birch allergy.

My brother is allergic to walnuts, pecans and bananas. I think the banana is also linked to latex allergy.
