Charlottechicken
I popped down to the local Co-op this morning, and went the back way down residential streets so I could check on the elderflowers. Halfway down one road, a front door opened and a woman came out of her house, right in front of me. She was dressed in full Edwardian ladies riding gear, long black rustly skirt with bustle at the back, grey jacket and one of those ladies black top hats that dips at the front and has ribbon down the back. She completed the ensemble with a black wheeled shopping trolley, and off she went, up the road! I'm all for dressing individually, and not following a trend and I've seen some sights in my time, including men dressed as women trying to blend in with a crowd, but that was one of the strangest outfits I have ever seen
Couperwife
wow i wonder if she was in an amateur dramatics society? me and kev went to the local farmers market yesterday and there were loads of people dressed up in costume, it turned out that they were advertising for their next show - they are doing Terry Pratchetts Masquerade at the end of May (must get tickets - i love TP!!) i suppose they would have had to leave their homes looking like that yesterday morning cathy x
Alis girls
Could it have been a ghost (ok I noted the shopping trolley) one with modern tastes!!

snowberry
How absolutely wonderful! I love that era & was definitely born in the wrong century (I'll need a TARDIS eglu though!) I know that there's a couple in Wales who live their lives in full Victorian dress, so there must be others about.
Ain't Nobody Here
How odd . I wonder if her shopping trolley was full of plastic containers and convenience foods or she shuns modern nonsense like that . On my half marathon yesterday, I thought there was a monk standing by the side of the road . When I got closer it seemed he was just wearing a floor length black robe type thing but he did look a bit odd . He was cheering us on though . Charlottechicken
Could it have been a ghost Never thought of that! I've found the house on street view, so I know what number it was and will look out for her again when I go that way.

CatsCube
Sounds normal enough to me, but then I dress in 40 and 50s vintage and reproduction clothes on a daily basis, I do get comments from the other mums on the school run sometimes as I have victory rolls in my hair and full circle skirts and petticoats etc. Some goths certainly favour victorian garb, I have seen some lovely stuff around for sale. (she must've had the trolley to fill up at the chocolate shop then!) Love the pics of your sister, Poet, I love Whitby!

chickenNutter
Poet, at least your sister only dresses up once a year. Mine dresses up as an ancient Briton or a Roman most weekends, as part of a re-enactment group. Mind you she is completely bonkers also. Cinnamon
Wonderful All we see in Banbury is far too much flesh... muffin tops and half-bared breasts ............and thats just the blokes! My youngest girl is an Emo/Punky type & wears this dreadful Amy Winehouse style make up. I tell her it looks horrid & she tells me that I am stopping her from being herself & expressing herself.............yet half the teens in town look like little identikit Cleos I once saw a woman in London who was obviously very into '40's fashion she looked amazing - she had the rolled hair, seamed stockings & everything. Imelda May is very unique,as is Florence Welch & that other woman - can't remember her name......wears some DAFT things,& has red hair somethimes

welovemarmite
where can i get milk cow!!! The problem I have is that I am not vintage size. I am tall in the body....
CatsCube
Likewise Im size 12 and 5'8 so not vinatge proportions, I wear reproduction mainly, althogh i also buy pattens from ebay and have my mum make them lol! its a great cheap way or having knitted two pieces! Milkcow can be bought online or in some newsagents http://www.milkcow.co.uk/ their website actually has a directory for shops. I lot of the reproduction shops will make adustements to when you order if the measurements arn't quite right. I find vivian of holloway stuff comes up rather long anyway. I highly recoment Heyday vintage and Tara Starlet, thats where I get the bulk of my stuff from. Although if doing a big clothes shop I take advantage of the exchange rate and buy a load from the US at places like pinup girl clothing. beach chick
I love people who dress up, whether for reenactments or for 'real life'. I could never have the energy - or the style - to do it myself, but I think it's so fantastic that people get so into it. our local steam railway had a 40's weekend this w/e just gone, with a collection of 40's vehicles - ambulances, cars, military vehicles - and everyone dressed up to match. just brilliant!
