My chicken garden complete . . . well nearly

Recommended Posts

My poor girls have been very bored the last couple of weeks kept in their coop, but finally its done.

I live in the middle of Norwich so I have a very small garden, its its about 6m x 8 meters, last time we had chickens they had a 2 x 6m run that dominated the garden. Since then we redid our garden, and I love it, its a lovely sociable and child friendly space, but as you can see no space for putting chickens.

However we had a brickweave driveway that runs down the side of the house and a useless patch of grass as a front lawn. so an idea formed . . . .

The brickweave was moved, so we now have an attractive and functional front parking area with planting.

But best of all I now I have a chicken garden!!!!! The main garden is kept chicken poo free and plants can live without being dug up or eaten and the dog can go out in the garden as she pleases without upsetting the chooks.

I have put some bamboo in which will grow too tall for the chickens to eat, the runs are on brickweave to so its easier to clean them out, and they have a lovely big dustbath just awaiting the bed being bolted in and filling.

Thanks all. Its mainly my other half's DIY efforts. There will be a third coop (I will also be getting the pink one the same as my blue one) As its mainly for my pekin babies, hopefully once they are hatched and outside I will have about 20, 10 to each house, with the hybrids living in the go.

I love the go, I prefer it to the other omlet houses as the plastic is different and not porous, so its easier to clean. It all depends on how many birds you want to keep though, as for pekins I don't think they are the best use of space, and my wooden coop is a lot more adaptable for a larger number of chicks.

Good on your OH for all that DIY  It all looks super.

By the way, if you should want to plant your bamboos in the soil rather than keeping them in pots I've found that chickens make excellent bamboo strippers, keeping the leaves off the bottom part so that you can see the lovely golden or black bamboo canes. Otherwise you'll probably need to do the stripping by hand and that makes for some sore skin
