sparkysmum
When our pekin's sister passed away earlier this year she was always the odd girl out. Didn't really hang out with either the big hens or the banties. Always happy enough though. However.....as pekins always do, she became broody. Didn't want to do hatching eggs for lots of reasons, but got talking to a breeder who offered me some day olds/two day old chicks. Well what could I do Here they are My little pekin is now the proud mum of 3x australorps, a light sussex, a brown leghorn and a pyle leghorn . Following Egluntynes advice I popped them under her about an hour ago . I checked on them shortly after and they're all tucked up under her wings . Bliss. Isn't nature wonderful. Can't speak for little peke but we're all grinning like cheshire cats. Can't wait to see her out & about with her chicks. Alli xx

sparkysmum
Aw thanks. They seem so content together and it's so amazing to see their tiny heads popping up from under Peke's feathers. I could do with some advice on one thing though - since she still has eggs under her will she actually get on with the job of mothering the chicks or should we remove the eggs altogether? Didn't do this last night for fear of disturbing them all. Thanks Alli xx
Ain't Nobody Here
Alli, they are soooo cute . I'm not surprised you're all grinning .
The Dogmother
I would remove the eggs. Chicks of that age need to be out and about and eating their chick crumb.
Clunie
Lovelly chicks Alli! Isn't it great how mother nature takes over. Happy little Peke I trust?
sparkysmum
Thanks Claret & Clunie, They're eating & drinking happily & all seems well. Little Peke seems to be the most contented mum on the planet. I keep saying I have to do something that isn't hen related..................well maybe tomorrow Alli x
bouldercroft
sooooooooo cute! can you explain what you did exactly? my lovely Rita is constantly broody but like you I don't really want to hatch eggs...
sparkysmum
Bouldercroft, Hi & thank you The whole thing, although frought with should I / shouldn't I anxiety was really straightforward. We returned from our holidays on Saturday and she was broodyish & the couple who were housesitting for us said that she had been broody for a few days before we returned. At this point I thought well lets go for it. I popped some normal eggs under her to see if she was really interested in sitting & she stuck to them like glue Although I was still debating should I /shouldn't I, I decided to investigate potential homes if I went ahead. At the same time I spoke to a reputable breeder not far from us. This was important for me because I would only use vaccinated chicks He also assured me that he would take back any males. He also assured me that if she rejected them he would take them back. Having been satisfied on all these grounds I felt there was nothing to lose. The chicks would be OK come what may and if she should accept them then that would be wonderful. As you know last night we popped the chicks under her & so far her instincts seem to have kicked in & all appears to be well. I should have said that by this time she had been broody for about a week & had been sitting on eggs for all of 3 days We took the eggs out from her this morning & am keeping my fingers tightly crossed. I should possibly also have said that I had a brief chat with a vet this morning about it all & she thinks evrything should be ok. For me this was the only way to go as I just couldn't hatch eggs.
