Alis girls
Anyone inundated with sandy coloured arachnids - little bodies - huge gangly legs? We are finding the blighters everywhere. YS who I think takes after my mum hates the things - he says they look at him i told him I suspect the one I missed in the shower might have binoculars I was told not to be so silly. Strangely yesterday was in our local Next store and was going up stairs as a spider was using the stairs to go down. i managed not to tread on him/her. patsylabrador
We have them everywhere, I can tolerate them until they get very big. They are prodigious makers of webs and no matter how much I hoover up, this house still looks like Haversham Hall (you know what I mean if that's wrong). I think they're called cellar spiders in America, and I believe they are very good hunters & keep other insects down which is why I try to tolerate them - but yucky. Especially when they appear from nowhere right in your face.

snowberry
I find the weight of the Argos catalogue does wonders in these cases...
Goosey Lucy
Not just London, we have them up here. And I thought it was just my poor housework! I don't know about them being fab hunters, mine don't seem to do anything but hang around all day...(a bit like me, really ) I don't remove them until they get quite large but I did take exception to the one that lived at the back of the plate cupboard. This one had a sixth sense (spidey sense?) and would scuttle off if I got the vacuum ready but would look at me while I got the plates out... KimmyCustard
We've also had some of them, there's a whopper wearing hobnail boots behind our sofa, I have a mini Dyson and as soon as I produce it, the little horror disappears! How do they know?!
Old Speckled Hen
We have a monster who lives in the lounge somewhere, he's good at avoiding the hoover, thank goodness. If I catch my cat stalking him she gets a ping on the ears ..........naughty girl

Seagazer
Spiders are the blight of my ES's life as he's an air conditioning engineer and has to go into loft spaces a lot. He absolutely hates them, he was in a roof with about 8 spiders the other day. I don't mind them, I can't touch them to put them outside but do cover them with a glass and chuck them out. My OH hates them and can't deal with them at all. He's got it from his mum who didn't use her upstairs bathroom once for weeks because there was a spider in there
snowberry
There was one the size of my hand this morning in the bath. I sent the kitten in

patsylabrador
Snowberry, is your kitten called Rambo? Sending the kitten in sounds hilarious. Do you have a budgie the kitten can call in as fast air? I hope you're training up the local ANA (Arachnid National Army).
Alis girls
The wet weather seems to have lessened the numbers a bit in the last few days
keyhole kate
Just out of interest those of you with numerous encounters of you know what's uugh cant even bare to type the name do you live close to trees I was told once that you get more of them if you are close to trees my previous house was alongside a disused railway embankment planted with trees and I was terrorised by them this house less trees and yes way way less encounters of the eight leg variety D
Lavenders_Blue
Uuuughhh what a creepy thread *shudder* I'm afraid if I see one of the 8 legged beasties in my house they go straight up the hoover. I'm not so terrified of the smaller ones, but they still get sucked to stop them growing into biggies! We have a stone fireplace in our living room. It's hard to describe but there's an arch above the gas fire which contains a deep groove (very bad description). Anyway, this groove seems to be a good hiding place for all manner of livestock - several times, we have been sat minding our own business of an evening and seen spiders of all sizes suddenly appear from there and start running around, and even a centipede once! donald
I couldn't kill 'em. I put them out with a glass and a piece of paper to cover the glass... Am amazed that people kill them when they catch flies and wasps(if they dont get eaten by wasps). Love em and I am far bigger than they are ,so yes if one tarantula is in the bath tub that will get put in a container and put back outside. What a shame to kill them! Useful ...spiders. Always taught to rescue them as a child by my nature loving mother...we must have been strange reading some of the ways to deal with them... my children are the same mindset just accept and remove if they are in the way of us. snowberry
I'll only worry when they're on the list of endangered creatures Sorry, but when you have such a mega fear of something like this, it's always differcult to rationalise it & deal with it appropriately. Everytime I kill a spider I know that it's brothers & sisters are out to get me

Everytime I kill a spider I know that it's brothers & sisters are out to get me I am really quite amazed at how ridiculous and cruel some of the responses are to spiders......great big human and a spider mega fear is what has been instilled as a child . Perhaps try to look at them in a different light as a friend that they will kill the pesky house flies or wasps that come in. I often find lots of dead bits of meals the spider has had under its web in the corner of my bedroom and am pleased the gnats got zapped by them.. Perhaps a change of mind set is needed....try it....I am sure the brothers and sisters are really not plotting to get you
