Olly
Wow - that's very clever, and also what a brilliantly-constructed video! Your OH must be a handy chap to have around the house.
Chicken shack
Well done. But two of my girls insist on sleeing out side the and each evening I have to bend down, crawl in, climb over pearches and pop them in. I then have to reverse out. I must look a sight. I have to do this as there are four foxes that would love to eat my girls.
Reikiranf
Fantastic invention & video, what a clever husband you have, instead of posting instructions I think he should be taking it to Dragon's Den
AnnieP
That is BRILLIANT! What a clever chap! Do you hire him out?
Leeloo
That is great! Watch out- Omlet will steal his idea and market it to those of us without handy husbands! My hubby is really not very mechanical! He has other advantages, though!
poppy ben grace
Thats great! I loved the video, it made me smile, how clever. I think your oh should get a job with omlet!
clucker1
Fabulous! I will show my husband and see if he can come up with the same. Seriously, you should market the idea to Omlet/Dragons Den and make sure you get the patent. Good luck, Clucker1 and the girls
hsgardens
Thanks so much for all the great comments. I'll have to tell my hubby to check into dragon's den. I had a feeling a lot of other Eglu owners would find his invention interesting. As my 11 year old says, "life is good...so are chickens!" bouldercroft
My clever husband built an automatic door opener and closer for our Eglu cube. Here is a link to the youtube video that shows it: He'll be posting detailed instructions soon in case anyone else wants to build one. love it!!! please post the instructions... Farmer Don
That is absolutely brilliant and I don't think he should post the instructions! I think you should contact Omlet/Dragons Den/Etc and tell them the idea. As far as I can see the only negative that Omlet Eglus have over wooden coops is the fact that you can't fit automatic door openers. This changes that and could be worth a bit! Well done to him! Chooksrus
Genius! C'mon, post the instructions already! Looks relatively straight-forward but the electric set up needs explaining.

Chucky Mama
Fantastic, I love the video too. You should patent your design
Jenny Smedley
Hi, Congrats to u both - this looks fantastic and has been said, solves the only draw back to the Eglu , i.e. not able to fit an automatic door opener. Couple of quick questions- I tend to use a garden hose to give my cube a really good clean- won't water cause rust problems with some of the fittings, not to mention the cordless screwdriver attachment? Also, I notice some electric cable goes out through the roof (adjacent to the door) across the guttering/"ditch" of the roof- doesn't that cause problems sliding the roof section on & off ? How do you "detach" the electric cable from the control box (mounted on the fence)- I need to move my cube around 180 degrees to clean it. Have you posted the instructions ? (Although I agree with everyone- you should patent it or sell it to Omlet!) Regards, Jenny Smedley

Spinning Top
Absolute genius - you must patent it then sell it to Omlet.
Cooks
Brilliant design My only worry would be squashing a sleeping chook in the doorway. But if there was some shut off sensor now that would be an added bonus.
Lewis
Love that! Best auto closer I've seen for the eglu's - should send it to Omlet, sure they'd love to see it
hsgardens
Brilliant design My only worry would be squashing a sleeping chook in the doorway. But if there was some shut off sensor now that would be an added bonus. Good point. We had this problem. No chicken was hurt! Some type of clutch, either mechanical or electronic is important to shut down the motor in the event of any type of binding. I used an electronic clutch. The motor controller gives an analog output that is proportional to the current draw on the motor. The arduino software monitors this input and if it jumps above a preset value, then the arduino stops the motor, sends a message via radio to the indoor computer which emails me that an error has occured. This is detailed on the webpage.
