Happy Mrs Chicken
How many of you use Stalosan F or any other kind of disinfectant in the run? My eglu run is on soil with woodchip on top.I rake it all out once a month and put fresh woodchip in(should i be doing this more often)Is the expense of disinfectant really necessary? Space Chick
I use BioDri which is similar but less powdery than Stalosan. I sprinkle it every week To be honest, your wood chip should last longer than a month.
Tweety
Hi, I use Biodri which does a similar job to Stalosan. My bantams are in a run on soil with wood chip on top too, although I don't replace the wood chip as often as you, so feel I should disinfect it every now and again. witzend
Is biodry (or something else) less dusty than SF? I find everything is coated in SF - chairs, table, eglu etc - guessing from chooks scratching around on the chips!!
Space Chick
BioDri is definitely less dusty than stalosan, it's more fine granules than powder
Happy Mrs Chicken
Thanks,i have ordered some BioDri
Valkyrie
I like both! But as I bought a humungous tub of Stalosan I feel I ought to finish that first. I also like the smell! I don't clean our run out as often as the girls aren't in there much - mine free range and only go inside for tea and bed - half hour tops. If it rains they like going in my greenhouse! But when I do rake it all out I put down a layer of garden lime first (the run is on soil), then aubiose and then a generous sprinkling of Stalosan on top of that. And then eventually I will use the bio dry.
Henergy
I've just tried a small tub of Nettex Ground Sanitising powder which seems to be the same too & I quite like that. Nice smell & granular as well.
nannyhenny
I use Stalosan with wood chippings on soil. I rake some in weekly and will expect to take off the loose woodchips and replace perhaps every 4 - 6 weeks. I try to use the powder on a day that's not too windy and it helps if the ground is damp. Banus
Can I ask the best place to obtain woodchips from. I'd like the course type. Garden centres only sell bark chippings for the garden which aren't suitable. Edited August 31, 2011 by Guest
Tweety
I get mine online from Flytesofancy, although the delivery charge is horrendous, but it is excellent stuff and lasts for ages. You could try somewhere like B & Q, although my local ones don't seem to stock it, or maybe a tree surgeon.

Henergy
I get woodchips from B&Q Me too - needs to be quite a big B&Q though. They don't sell it in my local one - but do in the large one about 4 miles away. I think you can look online & see if in stock at your local store. The Flytesoffamcy stuff is nice and I rake it over every few days and put Biodri in once a week. However, the girls seems to have kicked alot of it out of their run so this weekend as I am doing a powerwash of the eglu I am going to move the run onto a fresh patch of ground and put some new woodchip down. They have been on that patch of ground for 2 months. I was thinking that I'd have to move them every 2-3 months to give the ground time to recover (they aren't on grass) and also order a winter clear shade. nannyhenny
I got woodchips from Lidl - very cheap - or from our local discount warehouse/factory shop type place. Both cheaper than B and Q but B and Q more ubiquitous!
The Dogmother
I've just tried a small tub of Nettex Ground Sanitising powder which seems to be the same too & I quite like that. Nice smell & granular as well. I've been using this recently too and like it even more than either Stalosan (too powdery and inclined to blow everywhere) and BioDri. I use Aubiose in the run, which seems to keep drier and cleaner than woodchip; I replace the litter in the run every 6 weeks-ish depending on how it looks, I sprinkle one of the powdered disinfectants on the soil before I lay new Aubiose and then on top of the litter on a (roughly) fortnightly basis until I clear it out again. It never seems to get manky or dirty in there.
pips_pekins
I need to change the woodchip and have bags of aubiose which I haven't used yet in the run as I wasn't sure how messy it would be. Our garden is small and we are very close in proximity to our neighbours. I use boards around the run to try to contain the woodchip but they manage to kick it out. I don't want to upset the neighbours, they are lovely. What do you think? Thanks.
The Dogmother
I don't find a problem with it at all. I have some plastic lawn edging around the run and it keeps it all contained.
pips_pekins
Think I will try it. Silly getting new woodchip when I have nearly 2 bags of aubiose in the shed. Thanks Dogmother.
Mercedes55
We use Stalosan F in our WIR and also sprinkle some in the smaller run at the back of our garden. Seems to do a good job, however I do notice a thin pink film over my Eglu and Cube. We put Rapport down on the floor of our WIR as it's pretty much dry, depending on how much rain we have, not our fault but the guy who built it used a cheap roofing material and it's leaked since day one! We used to use the woodchips when we just had the Eglu and the little run, but found it hard to keep clean as the colour of the poo tended to blend in with the woodchips and if it got even slightly wet it got all mushy. The Rapport, which is similar to Aubiose but cheaper, is great. Only thing I would say I don't like about it is that it gets everywhere. In my shoes, on my clothes etc. I have to vacuum downstairs every day, which I didn't have to before. Even vacuum the mat outside the conservatory as that is covered with it. Doesn't help having a dog as she brings it in on her paws too

Perhaps it will be ok in the eglu run as I won't be walking in it. Wilkinsons have 25% off lawn edging and other gardeny things so have just bought a couple of rolls. I have to confess I am a bit anal about housework, most people probably wouldn't be as bothered as I am. Luckily I enjoy vacuuming
The Dogmother
I don't have a walk-in run so it's not really a problem for me. I change my shoes as I come in but the mat in the utility room usually accumulates mud and other stuff on a daily basis.
