Help! I am in severe pain. Does anyone have any ideas what i can do?

I have an impacted wisdom tooth which i'm waiting to have removed at the hospital. I also have to have another tooth (could be as many as 3) extracted. The dentist was going to extract one on Friday but couldn't because my blood pressure was too high. I have been having problems with my blood pressure and have been having tests and am receiving treatment. The pain i am getting isn't constant but is agony when it is there and usually lasts about 3 hrs and then eases off again. It's also difficult for me to eat and eating brings the pain on or makes it worse. I am taking co-codamol and ibuprofen but it's not doing much. Has anybody got any ideas for anything else i could try to ease the pain?

Ring the out of hours gp, we have a dentist on call who gives advice on pain relief. Anything soluble is good as works quicker (can you take aspirin ? If yes then get some anadin extra as contains caffeine) a hot water bottle held against your face will help too, you may need antibiotics if you have an infection. Sending hugs - tooth pain is awful :(

Sorry you have tried a hot water bottle - have you got any sensodyne toothpaste, the dental nurse at work told me to rub it on my tooth and gum after I had a big filling recently which was sensitive and it really worked :)

I would get back onto your GP and explain the severity of the pain. Maybe a prescription medication e.g. non steroidal anti inflammatory like diclofenic - (although I do not know if it would be ok to take if you have meds for high blood pressure)would help. There are certainly other types of pain relief available on prescription. Hope you can get some relief.

One of my daughters had a plush microwaveable dinosaur and holding that to my mouth really helped me.

I'm going to see a chap at the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford on Friday about having all of my wisdom teeth out. Can't say I'm looking forward to it but I'd rather have them all out in one go. I'm going to suggest a general anaesthetic

Will try my wheat bag again as well.

Good luck Griffin. My dentist referred me to the hospital for the whole lot but the hospital and pct denied the referral saying the dentist could do everything bar the wisdom tooth. If it wasn't for my BP being so high i would be rid of at least part of the problem  Doesn't help that i'm having cardiac investigations to and am diabetic! Just wish this pain didn't affect my ear and what seems like half my face to. Am off to bed now with the first dose of Tramadol.

I literally am feeling your pain as I've come back off of holiday with an ear infection that I think has either spread to my jaw/teeth or I've got a tooth infection too. Antibiotics and pain relief aren't doing anything. I'm going to ring the dentist this morning to try and get in. Its been awful, I can't eat properly (could be good for losing weight) but its made me feel so miserable. I've literally been waking up during the night crying.

With the clove, is it just a normal spice clove? Do you just suck it sort of thing?

Hi ClaireG! Hope you are starting to feel better with your toothache. I'm in a similar position at the moment, though for an as yet unknown reason. Things I tried (and which helped - haven't bothered to mention things that didn't!) are:

Alternating doses of ibuprofen and paracetamol - helps when the pain is not quite so severe, and keep taking it when the pain subsides as this helps to keep the pain in check when it re-occurs (doesn't do much when the pain is severe though :( ).

Rinsing your mouth with tepid salty water - tastes vile but does seem to help;

Clove oil (put it on a bit of cotton wool and leave it in your mouth next to the pain - this REALLY helps, though the taste is very strong

Bonjela OR Anbesol (sp?) OR new stuff which I think is called Bonjela Complete - that one really helps, though it is temporary relief

Warm or cold drink rinsed around your mouth (one or the other or possibly both might help - but one or both could make it worse, it's trial and error on that one).

Sorry, not much I can do to help other than the above and to sympathise - I'm right there with you, believe me!

Yo Claire - come over and I'll sort it out for you - mallet for sedation and a pair of pliers. You could have a couple of boxes of Pimms of course if you'd prefer those to a mallet?

Glad you managed some shut eye after all that. Hope it's sorted out soon - it's been going on for a long time now.

xxx
