Which Mattress? The best type please

Recommended Posts

OK went to john lewis tried loads of mattresses and came out more confused than ever before! Foam ones you can get too hot and was advised never to use an electric blanket due to fire risk??? Not that we use electric but good to know.

Springs galore??

But what is the best to get brand type longevity etc etc

Anyhow got back and decided our good old faithful mattress was quite comfy after all! 26 years old with new feather topper!!!

But we do fancy treating ourselves and think its long overdue

I used to own a bed shop - and without doubt the best mattresses are pocket sprung ones. The higher the spring count and the more luxurious the filling the better the mattress is. Last year we had to buy a new mattress and decided to try one with memory foam. After testing loads we bought one - and I can honestly say that although it is comfortable - I havent had a full nights sleep since we got it. Every night i drop off only to wake up an hour later absolutely boiling hot. It's got so I have to sleep outside the quilt no matter what the temperature. We are moving house shortly and are definately having a new pocket sprung mattress with no foam - the other one cost us 600 pounds but is being relegated to the spare room!

I agree pocket sprung - get one with as many springs as you can. Had ours for 10 years so really due a change but it is the comfiest thing I'm in no hurry. Whenever I stay somewhere else I am always glad to get back to my own bed it is the best one I've ever had.

The only slight downside is that it is really heavy to turn a king size pocket sprung mattress so we don't do it that often but it hasn't affected the comfort.

Another one who agrees :D

We bought a new double bed for the spare room about 4 years ago. It is sooo comfortable that we bought one for us the next time they were in the sale. We treated ourselves to a superking - turning the mattress is like an olympic event  but it is really comfy.

Another memory foam fan here. I was very concerned about the heat issue as I dont like being sweaty in bed but I did my research and bought one that professed "airflow technology" or something similar.

I hate it when we go away and have to sleep on a non foam mattress now. I have such good nights on my memory foam. And you dont need to spend a fortune either, I sourced mine thorough a company on ebay, again I did the research they had fab feedback and I paid a fraction of the highstreet price. I have been very pleased

Strangely enough we spent 30 mins in a bed shop yesterday choosing a new mattress. Our old one is about 14 years old, was really cheap, and I keep waking up with aching hips; its definitely time for a new one. We spent 2 weeks sleeping on a memory foam mattress recently at a cousin's house and I thought is was warmer than I'm used to, but pretty comfy - I can see this could be an issue if you tend to be hot in bed. My OH thought it was marvellous.

If you go for pocket sprung, the bedlady explained the more springs you have the more comfortable and supportive the mattress. We tried them out from about 1000 springs to 1400 for a double bed. Strangely we liked the 1000 spring one best. It was firm underneath but with a very comfortable enveloping top layer. We decided to try out a memory foam as well, although they are far more expensive than I thought I'd ever pay for a mattress. She left us to mull it over so we spent 5 mins on the memory foam chatting. Then we went back to our favourite 1000 spring one. And then we realised the memory foam was far more comfortable! It feels more supportive as it moulds to your shape and supports all of you. It is slightly odd feeling to start as you sink in a bit rather than lying on the top.

So, we are £780 the lighter for a Tempur from Dreamland, where this particular one is called an Aspire. I reckon this has cost more than all the mattresses I have ever purchased put together  But I'm rationalising to myself by saying my comfort is actually affecting my health, we've been mega-Scrooges up until now, and OH is very pleased. I can't tell you if it is the best, but I do hope so!

We have a Vi-Spring mattress. I can't remember the ins and outs of the type and number of springs etc, but I do remember that we tried a lot of mattresses in the shops and, although this one wasn't cheap, it was the comfiest we tried and we have been so pleased with it in the two years we've had it.

Our bed is super king sized and our mattress is actually two single mattresses zipped together in the middle. This makes turning the mattress over a much easier job, as we can unzip the middle, turn the two halves over and then re-zip. It also means that if one person wants e.g. a soft mattress and one person a firm mattress then you can both have what you want as each half of the mattress can be different levels of firmness.

I am another fan of memory foam but i find it too soft to get out of bed when i'm in pain and i find it a struggle.

I bought a 1000 pocket sprung memory foam mattress ( 10 " deep King size .) it was in the august sales for £ 600 , the lovely new bed to put it on was rather a lot more, but i am very pleased with it. I find the sprung pockets give me a bit of support with the luxury of the memory foam to ease my aches and pains....dare i admit i'd rather stay in bed on a morning these days.

I confess my 10+ year old king size mattress has over 2000 springs in it and cost a fair penny when we got it (however I did get it in a sale). When I last went bed shopping with my Mum we lay on a foam one and didn't find it comfortable. I guess you have to try them out and pick one that is right for you - after all we are all different shapes and sizes and like different things. :)

My rationale is that you spend a lot of time in bed so if it help you sleep and helps your health then it is money well spent. Can't afford a new one now though!

We have a Relyon mattress bought many years ago in the sale. We used a small endowment plan that had matured to buy it. Yep, it cost that much

It's still really comfy although we now have a memomry foam topper on it. Oh and it's so heavy that it took 3 removal men to carry it:lol:

We got a sprung one, but with a memory foam layer on top of that. I love it. It's nice and supportive, but the top layer is great - you feel like you are melting into it.

We got it from Ikea about 6 years ago, for a lot less than it sounds like many mattresses are.

Whenever I sleep away from home, I really notice it when I'm back in our own bed and have to say "ooo, I forget how comfy it is"

I too have a pocket sprung mattress with a built in memory foam layer on the top - best of both worlds! It was expensive but well worth it (replaced a vi-sprung which was also exceedingly comfortable but had to be replaced after about 15 years)

We have a bed frame and the base is a vi-sprung as well so we have 2 lots of springs!

(the more I typed the word "sprung" the sillier it seemed  )

The main thing is to maintain your mattress - turn it every month... top to bottom and flip it over. Hoover both sides as you do this; they will be more comfy and last longer if you do.

Good advice, although we were told to only ROTATE our memory foam one and not flip it over, for 2 good reasons... the air-foam is only on the top AND, at something like 40kg, I'd do my back in if I tried to flip it

We had to rotate once a week for the first month then once a month for three months then once every 3 months... Basically, follow the instructions and you can't go far wrong :D And you won't invalidate the guarantee!

 My point was, the manufacturer's instructions differ so follow them to the letter so you don't invalidate your guarantee.

BTW, there are some great bargains (up to 60% off!) on http://www.sainsbury.co.uk until 22 Nov - just saw a 2,400-spring kingsize reduced from £1,200 to £480  Free delivery too - we paid £50 for the privilege when we ordered ours
