Ain't Nobody Here
Bit of a quick decision as we only started thinking about it a week ago but I've gone ahead and booked for 4 nights in New York in August. It's my 50th and YS's 18th on the same day so it's a double celebration . None of us has been to America before so it's going to be a big adventure . Olly
I've been to New York once - I loved it, and I'm rather hoping that a good friend who is 50 this year will want to have a weekend there for her birthday. It's fabulous, and four nights is the perfect length of time in my opinion. How exciting!

Ain't Nobody Here
Thanks everyone, I'm already getting excited . We're flying direct from Edinburgh with Continental (7 hr flight roughly) and staying at the Salisbury Hotel in a family room just off Central Park. The reviews all said that the family rooms were huge for NY so that was my main reason for picking it. You could go crazy trying to find a hotel, there are so many to choose from! Now comes the planning of what we'll try to do and see while we're there .
craftyhunnypie
You will love it!!!! Get saving those pennies as after the sight seeing, you will definitely want to hit the American shopping malls & big stores!! Congratulations on booking your exciting trip! percy049
you will definitely want to hit the American shopping malls & big stores!! Emma.x yes, we usually do our yearly shopping in America. We go with 2 bags and come back with 6!
Ain't Nobody Here
None of my boys are the slightest bit interested in shopping (and I'm not that bothered either ) so I don't think we'll need an empty suitcase . However, I will obviously need a 50th birthday present and I did wonder about buying YS his 18th birthday present (possibly a laptop) there. What are the pitfalls of buying electrical items in the USA (apart from the problem of what to do if it doesn't work/breaks down)?
LolaLayla
Lovely news Just remember if you buy something for YS that the price you see is without tax and it can be a bit of a shock when they present the final bill My YS got a phone (there is a whole long story attached to that, I will bore you with it another time) and after negotiating what we thought was a good price the tax was suddenly added. j00lz_12366
oohhh i bet you're so excited-we have booked to go in June, never been before either. I've found lots of helpful info on moneysaving expert website-there's a forum for overseas holidays on there Hope you all have fun!
percy049
I always forget to add tax on! Don't forget with electrical items, they will have an American plug. Also, they will be configured for American use, so, as you said, if something happens, it will be difficult to sort it out
Sammiboo
how exciting!!! dont forget the laptop will have an american keyboard too
percy049
dont forget the laptop will have an american keyboard too yes, and it will take a while to get used to it I'm glad I have my phone with wi-fi now to use the internet in the USA, the keyboards are so difficult to use when you're used to the English ones!
