Silkies - so excited!

Recommended Posts

Well we have had the new girls a week now and it has been really interesting finding out how different they are to L and L. Once they had discovered the eglu they now spend a lot of time in there and even if the run is open they are not very keen to explore far. Although they are large they do not eat as much (nor do the huge poos) and lay eggs about half the size of our oldies. They also go to bed a bit earlier. One has laid an egg on the bars which got broken so I am not sure if they are keen as yet to use the nest box much. I do not think they are as smart as L and L either which doesn't really say a lot  They are a bit slow on the uptake when it comes to working out that shaking the mealworm tub means treats...but it's still early days :D

As there has been no sign of any illness I have now moved the eglus and runs side by side. I also moved the netting to allow L and L to fr round the outside of the runs. I tried this for the first time today and Layla (head hen) was very interested in trying to get into the new girls run but there was no shouting so that is good. The new girls paid little attention to Layla. I plan to worm them soon so they will be confined to their runs for a week anyway.

Things are going well and I really love the Silkies. OH says he has now dropped to fifth in line to get attention :lol::lol:

I am not sure if both are laying. So far we have had 4 eggs. They are a white/cream colour. YS surprised me by using his brain the other day. He was making doughnuts (he has a machine to cook them in) and the recipe required half an egg so he used a Silkie one  Usually there is a fair bit of waste.........

Yes poor OH  He did help me move the eglus and runs today so I have to give Brownie points as it was really cold and I managed drop a large stone on my foot while I was putting it on the run skirt to hold it down, so was not in the best of moods  He also wielded the diatom while I held the girls. I even managed to get a bit of a dusting as he was rather over enthusiastic. I managed not to breathe it in :D None of us will have mites

Can't have been fun moving eglus it's been such a chilly weekend. Sounds as though it's going smoothly though, apart from the boulder on your foot ouch. One day I'll have silkies :D

Yes it was so cold. It is icy again this morning but all my girls seem happy. I think both the Silkies are laying as I found a small softy and a broken egg :( . They still seem a bit clumsy in the nest box. I usually use paper shreddings which have up until now worked fine but I am getting some auboise to try.

Oh I am so envious, since Mabel on the table died on the 13th have tried so hard to get 2 Silkies, but cannot find any within a 2 hour drive :(:( Infact seems to be a huge shortage of any lovely breeds around at the moment. Second on my list were Orpingtons or Seabrights.. Lets be honest anything really :lol:

But I so want Silkies, If you decide that you actually dont really need them let us know :lol:

Those silkies are lovely :)

Margaret, it is a 2 hour drive from Sevenoaks in Kent to where I live in Oxfordshire (I know because I do it every other weekend to visit my mother) and near me there is somewhere (Acorn nursery) that has some silkies (a gold and a blue from memory). You'd be most welcome to stop off at my home for a journey break if you want, see my chickens and have some cake and tea / coffee. :D (Redwing and Dogmother can vouch that I am not a scary person) but I'm not sure how far on from Sevenoaks you are. PM me if this sounds like an idea.

The story is . . . that once upon a time Margaret wanted some cuties. I have a little Frizzle (Daisy, my avatar) who is being mollared by my cockerel. I had him separated from the flock all last summer, living on the patio, but this is not really possible this year as that puts him right under my nextdoor neighbour's bedroom window and I now have different neighbours from last year. So it was going to be either she goes or he goes and I know who would be easiest to rehome :anxious:

Daisy's best buddy is a little black Silkie (Dinky and Daisy go everywhere together). Margaret really really wants a Silkie. So Margaret gets Dinky and helps me with Daisy  I think that makes both Daisy and Dinky real chickens of fate :D They go off to their new home next weekend. Meantime they'll both have baths and Dinky is learning her new name which is to be 'Lily'.
