Uma
So we went to the Poultry show this morning.... and have come home with three massive orpington girls.... A splash, blue and black. They are humungious! Currently in the eglu with our other three girls free ranging round them and seem to be happy and right at home. Not got photos yet, but I will!! Names are Lily, Poppy and Rosie. The ejit that I am, I forgot to take the sellers card with me and I wanted to contact him to know exactely how old the girls are... If anyone is going to the show later today or tomorrow and read this, please can you look for a little card (purple colour?) with a man's name and mobile on it on the sales pens. There were a few on the ducks too.... Uma Edited January 23, 2012 by Guest

Redwing
Hiya, I was there when you bought the pullets, somehow I knew it was you but to shy to ask in case it wasn't! I have picked up the card from the pen, will pm you with the details a bit later when it's less frenetic here!
Uma
Redwing-Haha, what gave it away? The general mad demeanour, or just looking a little out of place... (Note to self-do not wear a skirt to such events in future...) Thats great, thank you for picking it up for me! Girls look very happy and tucking into the grit and shell at a crazy rate. I wished we lived nearer as I'd love to pop back but my 3 yr old son was getting slightly overwhelmed.

taffeta
I too went to the show this morning and was wondering if there were any other omleteers there. I knew Redwing was going but couldn't tell who she was! It was my very first time at a show and I didn't really know what to expect. I think I admired Lola's white silkies and my little girl is now adamant that we need 2 black ones. I wondered if there is a certain etiquette to it all. Is it ok to be wandering around looking at the birds when there is judging going on or are you supposed to stay well clear? Also, if you want to buy who do you speak to? I could see info tags on the sale pens but no actual seller. I may well be developing Morehens disease and might go back next year.... Uma
Taffeta, did you have two children with you or just one? If you were there between 9.30 and 12 then I think I spotted you, as there were not that many people with children around. I too was a total novice today and had to ask an older lady who seemed to know what was going on how on earth you bought something! What you do it take the envelope from the pen and take it to the man sitting at the desk with the money tin (look for a queue!). You then pay the man, give him your name and address and he gives you a card to say which birds are yours. He also asks you to put a sold sign on the pen. Very confusing if you don't know whats going on.... plus you don't get to meet the breeder which I hadn't anticipated. The sales area was manic to say the least! Ain't Nobody Here
All sounds a bit scary for a novice . I'm glad I'm just going for a look and to meet Redwing . Oh and pick up my new girls, of course .

taffeta
I just took my 8 year old daughter as the last time I took my 4 year old son to our local agricultural show he wanted to cuddle every chicken in sight! We probably walked past each other. It was great to see all the different breeds in the flesh, so to speak. I had never even seen a bantam before and was amazed by how tiny they are. And your Orpingtons were stunning. My daughter loved the buff ones and I must admit they are now on my list of potential future purchases. Either that or Cochins. I didn't know what to expect but it was well worth the journey.
Uma
Egg! One of the new girls laid an egg this morning in the run. Wow, totally unexpected as I had assumed, being pure breeds, they would not lay until spring! Now just need to teach them about the nest box.... Intros going well though, all of them seem very laid back!
AndreaT
Wow, they are gorgeous! And what a beautiful garden. I'm very , orpingtons are top of my list for when I can have some more girls. I really wanted to go to the show but have been working all weekend, probably a good job as I'm sure something would have sneaked into my car and come home with me
