Chucky Mama
OMG this photo of a rat caught in Co Durham fills me with horror. If I saw this in my garden I would die on the spot.

superkitty
Ah, it's a coypu! There used to be a big problem with those on the norfolk broads - when I was little, we had a white van that was an ex-Coypu Patrol van - they used to have to cull them
LuckyChickenLover-
Wow! I thought my Rinny (who is a little on the fat side ) was big! That thing is HUGE!
jasperaliceuk
I was just thinking surely that's a Coypu!! Quite relieved now. Sue
Olly
I'm slightly relieved it's not a normal rat - still wouldn't want to find one in my garden, though.
Chucky Mama
Either way I am staying well away from Co Durham now
The Dogmother
Yuk! Used to see Coypu on the Broads a lot when we were younger - they can be quite big. From what I can see of the snout, it looks blunter and more Coypu-like. Sadly, they are just as destructive as rats
scubababe
Nope. Definitely don't want that or it's buddies in my garden
snowberry
When I first saw it, it looked more beaverish to me...
kazmac
There's a discussion about this on the NFRS forum too. The general concensus is that it's a coypu. I just don't like how the poor thing met its end - it's been mentioned that he's now being spoken to by the police because he battered it to death with a piece of wood, but I don't know how true that is. It was apparently printed in one of the local papers.
The Dogmother
He'd have had to be pretty fast to do that; I remember my grandad 'shovelling' a rat which came up out of the stream on their land and went for him when he tried to kick it away, they move like lightening.
