Luvachicken
Well, I'm a bit disappointed because Melody is broody again. I can't use the dog crate at the moment because there is not much space with the new run coming tomorrow We have shut the bedroom door so she can't get in so instead she has taken to try and hatch anything on the wheel of the cube Silly chicken
sparkysmum
Some traditional old poultry keepers used to hang their broody cage from the branch of a tree Worth a try

Duncan08
Visions of a hen in a box hanging in a tree pics please. I thought that too My mum used to hang the budgie cage on the end of the rotary washing line in good weather when I was little I must admit I have tended to leave the broody to it before. Just making sure she is getting some food and drink, and locking her out of the nest box if everyone has laid.
The Dogmother
That's an old one which I've posted about before; my grandfather used to hang the cage fro a tree in the orchard, nice and shady! My lavender pekin is revving up to take up her customary position in the nest box before she gets scooted into the broody cage... it's an eternal cycle with her and she will starve herself if left to brood
Kazzy73
I have my first broody (light sussex) in a dog crate since weekend and shes just started to squat again and stopped making that horrid noise and fluffing all up do you think its safe to return her as she gets a bit upset when shes the others FR or shall I leave it a bit longer. The Dogmother
She should only need 3 days/nights 24/7 in a crate.
Kazzy73
have put her back and shes ok sitting in the shade having a dust bath
Plum
I'm cruel and shut the door of the cube. The others will lay in a little wooden house which fortunately the broody pair don't sit in. I would feel cruel putting them in a dog crate, when out in the run they are active even if heading back to the nest box every few minutes and very disgruntled at finding they can't get in Nothing like a hormonal hen! Luvachicken
All I've heard all day is a moaning chicken. I'm not sure how much she has eaten or drank today, but once the new run is up she can go back in the dog crate
