Styling products for curly hair?

Recommended Posts

I have never had my hair cut dry  I have had it straightened once and then cut but never whilst dry and curly. I would have thought it was really difficult cut dry as the tightness of your curls on a day to day basis can vary so much. I always have to have my hair wet and the curl pulled down and virtually straight during cutting. I go to a specialist afro/curly hairdressers and they would never dream of cutting hair dry. I suppose it depends on whether you have wavy/curly hair though rather than tighter curly hair. I once had a nightmare cut when someone cut so slowly that my hair started to dry. I suggested that he re wet it but he insisted on brushing it  - big mistake. It got really big and in a panic he used up 3 very expensive bottles of moroccan oil in an attempt to control it. My hair just sucked it up and remained huge. I felt really sorry for him - worst haircut I have ever had  - and the most expensive for the hairdresser as they couldn't charge me for all the moroccan oil.

ChuckyMama - my hair is curly/wavy not ringlets any more (since having the boys!) and a dry cut works well for me. I find that, if its wet cut, it is pulled straight to cut it without any real clue as to how much its going to 'spring back up' again once dry. I do rush home and wash it but always find that it 'sits right' after a wash and air dry - I am lucky to have a hairdresser who understands both my hair and me!!!!

The wet cuts that I have had have resulted in much shorter hair than I had planned on as it just shoots up into curls again; guess we are all different 8) . Sometimes my hairdresser will use a water spray but only lightly in order to get the comb through it!!!!!

I really do think that the secret to manageable curly hair is to find a hairdresser that knows what they are doing with curly hair and that you completely trust and that, in itself, can be a traumatic journey but, once you have found your person, its great (often if you just look round the salon and pick the stylist with curls of their own its a good bet you'll be fine!)

This reminds me of the worst haircut I ever had. New hair dresser cut my fringe wet :shock: once my hair dried my fringe sprung up and ended up half way up my forehead and probably about an inch above my eyebrows. I went home and cried and was nearly a hermit. I was about 18 or 19 aswell so at that important image age. Horrific, didnt go back

 Oh my! I did a similar thing when I cut DD's hair when she was young  I

I agree, I have resorted to trawling hairdressing salons looking for a stylist with curly hair before now

LOL at looking for a curly top hairdresser......my chap is bald,as cheap as chips, comes to my house & has a curly wife,so he knows his curly hair!

BIG thumbs up for the Organic Moroccan oil, shampoo & conditioner from me,after just one use.

My hair is soft & curly with no frizz & I got complimented on it 3 times at work today.

I will be back to Boots next week to stock up while it is on 3 for 2.

My youngest daughter loved it too & woke this morning with a head of gorgeous Marilyn type big curls rather than her usual mad mop. She was delighted :P

Only just caught up with this thread - it's been a busy weekend

I get called Crystal Tips all the time. My hair is less curly than it used to be and more prone to frizz. DS says my hair is like Monica's from Friends when she went on holiday and it was really humid but mine does that all year round. I never use a brush and try, when possible, to let it dry naturally for the same reasons as everyone has already said.

The Moroccan Oil sounds good. I use a mixture of products. I like the Naked Curl Defining products and sometimes use the serum. Other times I use a dollop of Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly Finishing Cream, it is in a purple pot  They also do a shampoo and conditioner for curly hair.

When I want a messy look, I use wella shock waves texture gum which tames it more but leaves it a bit sticky. It tends to look a bit greasy in places with this but it does hold it.

My son has lovely curly hair, long ringlets and he will not use anything other than Aussie products. They seem to work for him but I am not keen on the smell

Absolutely right about getting the cut right. I gave up for years and just grew my hair and tied it up. I like my current hairdresser because she listens to me and she is getting used to my hair. I have kept it in the same style for a while now as I find it needs time to grow in to it if that makes sense. I have it in a curly sort of bob and just have it trimmed every 6 weeks. What I do find is that colour that seems to hold on straight hair fades really quickly on mine. I had the same colour as my hairdresser and within 3 to 4 weeks mine had gone really dull, even she was surprised. Just to make it clear, I only have the colour because I like a change, not because I have any grey you understand

I like Aussie products & like the smell too - its the Lee Stafford stuff I cannot bear, which is a shame as they do a great sea salt spray for tousled curls too.

The Herbal Essences tousle shampoo & conditioner I found very good, but I really did not get on with the styling cream, finding it a bit sticky compared to Frizz Ease secret Agent :?

I must admit that the very best thing for my hair between washes is for me to have a bath & let the ends hang in the water, then dry on their own, without brushing, towelling or anything - they go into nice fat spirals that way (but it does take a while unless its hot out!)

I am lucky that my curl seems to start a couple of inches along the hair shaft,so the top of my hair is usually pretty tame....I have a sort of grown out shaggy perm look :lol:

Cinnamon - my hair is like that too.......the top 2inches or so are flat then it does its own thing  !!! That means that it doesn't stick out too much but does make it look like I've had a perm! I often get asked if my hair is natural (euphamism for 'is it a perm  ?') to which my answer is 'of course - do you really think I would choose to look like this...I've just given up fighting it!'

I'll see if Boots still have the 3 for 2 offer on Friday when I shop and, if so, will try some of their Argan stuff!

Thanks for offering to check with your chap re travelling - quite understand if its too far!!!!

Have you tried the Aussie products recently? They've changed the smell in some of them - they used to have a sickly sweet and strong smell but it's much nicer now.
DS uses their products and I sometimes use a bit but find the smell a bit off putting. The products are good but I prefer other things as I am a bit funny when it comes to smells.

Thanks Sarah. I've successfuklly used Moroccon Oil (was it Egluntyne who recommended that originally?), so I bought some of this shampoo and conditioner today. Looking forward to using it in a couple of days, and will report back.

After a discussion on another thread, I've been using cider vinegar on my hair, and that has been leaving my hair very soft. Not particularly shiny, but then I have thick curly hair which doesn't tend to be shiny, not even when professionally newly coloured. However, I did spot that the "inside"of some o fthe curls were catching the light. I'll stop with the vinegar and see how the new products work,

Am expecting Great Things.

Thanks again

I used the boots shampoo and conditioner earlier for the first time.I usually have to straighten my hair to get anywhere near any control over my frizz, but think i might be able to get away without :D My hair is lovely and soft and shiny to :D It's a definite thumbs up from me and my non curly but very frizz prone hair!

Your right Sarah, the shampoo is rather gel like.

I went to Boots yesterday to have a look at some of the recommended hair products from this thread. There was a bewildering array of Argan Oil products, I assume it is the latest miracle ingredient?! In the end I went for THIS argan oil product and also invested in a Tangle Teezer hairbrush. I'm off to wash my hair now so we'll see how it goes.

The verdict from the first wash today is that the Argan Oil is pretty good. So far I don't think it's amazing or a wonder product but my hair is definitely less frizzy than usual and feels really, really soft. I probably need to play around with using the right amount of the product. It definitely cuts down on drying time, which is amazing!

My hair is overdue to be cut, but I don't think I'll be able to go for a couple of weeks. When I get round to getting it cut, I'll update on here again as with the best will in the world, any hair product is going to struggle to tame thick, wavy hair in desperate need of a cut
