Productive things to do in the summer holidays?

Recommended Posts

Hey again, you can tell I haven't been on here for a while! :)

I have just broken up for the summer holidays - a glorious 9 weeks of freedom! Unfortunately this preposterous amount of time can be a curse as well as a blessing as it gives me plenty of time to do all the things I haven't had time to do all year, but is also incredibly boring! I know, I can't believe I said it.

I'm busy for two weeks, and a significant amount of the remaining 7 weeks will be taken up by school work, of which I have a hideous amount (which is unfortunately why I can't apply for a summer job :( But I know that due to a lot a procrastination and the fact that no human being can work every minute of every day for 7 weeks, I will have a lot of spare time.

Does anyone have anything that they usually do when they have a lot of free time? Like particular day trips (preferably free or very cheap), activities at home or some form of volunteering to achieve a vague sense of accomplishment instead of vegetating hopelessly?

Many Thanks! x

.......teach yourself to bake bread or a decent cake or to make jam.

All low in cost & really useful life lessons.

Last summer my daughter taught herself 6 or so good basic recipes before going off go uni,& they have proved really useful to her.

This year she is mostly playing computer games,it would seem.

I always recommend the South Bank for a day trip into London and the Museum of London, but this year, maybe not. Learning a language is fun and this year I'm learning about the Cathars. DD is digging a pond. I think national trust do volunteer holidays like canal clearance - that sort of thing. You should spend some time watching Modern Family which would be productive because it will make you laugh. Reading in the garden is always time well spent.

How about making a Christmas cake - it would be ready good and early to have lots of brandy soaked through it over the coming months....................or maybe a Christmas stocking for someone special............I know, there is ages til Christmas  Get in early I say.

Teach yourself how to play the guitar. You can learn to play the chords by watching youtube. You can pick up a basic entry standard guitar quite cheaply on ebay or Amazon. Don't forget the joy of reading, it is easy to forget getting into a good book when you have been studying. Exercise is good and learning how to cook on a budget can be real fun.

Love the ideas :)

I've always wanted to play the guitar, I might just do that - I can use my dad's acoustic one :)

Cooking is definitely a good one, I spend most of my time making cakes anyway, but I'm sure there are loads of others out there I can find :) That gives me an idea for another topic.... ;)

And I might go for a couple of national trust volunteering days too :)

That's my summer pretty much sorted then! Thanks all x

Looks like you have lots of great ideas now . I plan to make a weekly to do list , something like... Each week i will go for a 3mile walk, bake a cake, go swimming, watch something ive never seen before, watch something ive seen lots of times before, do one household chore ive been putting off etc... And thats before i add the kids wish list to it! Enjoy your free time and remember to leave a few moments to do simply nothing but soak up the world around you xxx :)

Hi

I have no idea what year you're in - or what your plans are for after school.

Perhaps one day a week volunteering would be good - would look good on a Uni or job application form.

Our library has lists of opportunities.

If possible, align it to possible future plans eg. in a hospital, hospice (caring experience), charity shop (experience of handling money, customers etc).

Let us know what you decide.
