Facebook and a group for all of us!

Recommended Posts

I joined Facebook a few weeks ago after much nagging by some of my nearest and dearest friends. It is a networking site. I am gradually finding I am back in touch with people that I 'mislaid' some 13 years ago!

Whilst browsing the groups I noticed there was nothing to do with us proud Omlet owners.

So I have created a group especially for all of us!

Feel free to join...

www.facebook.com

group is 'Omleteers'. I didn't know what else to name it

As we have so many new members,I thought I would revive this old thread about the Omlet Facebook page.

If you look on the wall, most of us who have joined have introduced ourselves by our real names,so you know who you are chatting to & who to add as a friend 8)

Enjoy!

Hmmmm...it's not for me...I prefer to keep an air of mystery about myself. I have only shared my surname with a very few Omleteers.

I logged on as my son and noticed that two of our young Omleteers have announced which schools they go to.

That is more info than I would have liked my youngsters to put in the public domain when they were that age.

Sorry to be an old misery.

I too must admit to being an old misery (no surprises there then).

I did the Facebook bit and had my page, and I poked people and all the other stuff you are supposed to do. I had a few friends - then one of them, the wife of a bloke I play golf with, posted a picture she had taken of me driving off the 16th tee (actually slicing onto the beach!). I realised that I had lost control - pictures of me were going up, folk could access my page and get an idea of what I was doing. My son was applying for jobs and I realised that potential employers might see stuff about his Dad etc. etc.

So I closed my Facebook page, took down my website and decided to return to relative anonymity.

So, yet again Richard is being an old killjoy grump

I quite enjoy hearing what others are doing on a daily basis. We all know the dangers of the internet, but Facebook has several layers of security which you can choose. One of my friends has chosen such a high level that no-one can see him at all  but he is there!

For those who like games, it's quite fun. I have enjoyed long-distance scrabble and various quizzes. It's also good for Good Causes and I have been able to 'badger' several organisatiions on behalf of Tearfund so easily through Facebook. I've also hounded supermarkets re broiler chickens etc and just by joining a Group, I can spread its message to all my contacts. That is quite powerful.

My daughter has joined the group called "OMG, my mum's on Facebook"!!

A few weeks ago I got a postcard addressed to someone who'd clearly lived at my house some time ago - I knew it wasn't the previous owner from whom I bought the house, as I had their name and address. The card began 'sorry to contact you at your parents', but I've lost your details'.

I searched the name on Facebook, emailed the two most likely (guessing at the age/location) and within an hour I got an email back from the son of the previous owners, confirming that he'd lived there. I was able to scan the postcard and email it to him.

I took the opportunity to say how much I love the garden, and ask if his parents had laid it out - and he said his mum would love to hear that I'd got chickens, as they always planned to get some!

So Facebook has its uses, I agree that you should be cautious about security though - a lot of people don't stop to think about it.

I have some of you on my facebook :D .

It is nice to keep in touch and I have got in touch with a few old school friends via it. Its an easy way of keeping in contact with your friends when we are all so busy.

Its good fun and is nice to put faces to names of people you chat to on here.

Yes, I enjoyed beating you that one time Ginette! I must try and relive the moment!!

Facebook is as secure as you want it to be. It allows as much info you want to disclose - all, some or nothing. I do agree that it is careless putting too many personal details on the web, whether in Facebook or on a forum. I think Facebook does bring this to the forwfront though and makes you think about your own safety - and you either decide to join or not to join.

I've found it one of the safest and 'identity controlable' sites out there.

I have had a couple of old friends contact me through Facebook - and an ex-boyfriend from my schooldays

I don't really go on there wery much but thanks to Claire (Redfrock) for introducing me to it.

Maybe one day a long-lost relative will get in touch about an inheritance
