chuckmum6
I fairly certain this is a Legbar and a girl, it/she belongs to a colleague, it hatched at the start of September. I have a Cream Crested Legbar, but this young bird has different colouring although in her/its form is very similar. Any ideas?
sjp
it looks like a cream legbar. but if it were mine and it's about 8 or 9 weeks old I'd be thinking a boy
chicken bark
Not sure but I'd say it was a male. Showing more of its ancestral colours/markings maybe?

Egluntyne
Doesn't look like either Cream Legbar or a girl to me.
sandyhas3chucks
startled is what it looks to me.!! Seriously I thought C Leg bars were an auto sexing breed???? or is it that y=they are easy as chicks to sex????
good_egg
I think the chicks look different from day 1 so easy to sex and dispatch unwanted boys. Looks a but like the young CCL cockerels I've seen, but don't take my word for it as I will only relax that my girls are girls when they lay! chuckmum6
Thanks all, I will have to pop back and have a look at it in a couple more weeks. My CCLB, now aged 3, did/does look like a cockeral, I worried that she was a he when we got her, but she went on and laid lovely blue eggs, however she has now stopped laying and taken up a strangled crow at dawn! I agree this bird does have a fabulous crest, not sure that the family are fully committed to keeping any of the birds they hatched though, they do definitely have two hens and this one (?). sandyhas3chucks
Well you given me a little hope for my perhaps boy. Only six weeks old has a clb dad and perhaps a silky. Cross something for mum. He /she also has a splendid tuft
good_egg
I thought CCL were one of the only auto sex pure breeds? Meaning you can tell girls and boys apart from their feathers from early on (day 1). The pure breed boys are I think rather like the silver in the picture and the girls have a bit more of a partridge look to them with gold neck feathers etc - both have a top knot. So I think you should be fairly confident if pure breed what sex (although imagine doesn't work for silkie cross). I'm saying this because I have a CCL that I have always assumed is a girl, but right from day 1 she had a bit more comb and wattles than her 'sisters' - 20 weeks now and I'm fairly confident not a boy, but no eggs to prove (don't expect til spring)
sandyhas3chucks
Sorry good egg I have confused the thread. Mine are crosses.the original post and photos not mine. I however also have a clb youngster. She didn't look quite like the photo. However I understand true clb are rather. Rare
MedusA
No idea, but what a fabulous topknot . Yes. I think it has a look of Woody Woodpecker. Gorgeous! Legs make me think it's a boy, but only guessing.
Redwing
Its a male CCL by the look of it Cream Legbars can look very different across strains, the females shouldnt be too gold looking, their hackles should be cream not gold and so I think that causes a lot of confusion, there are an awful lot of really poor quality ones about Males are more stripey and more grey so thats why I say this one is male There are also lots of hybrid or cross breed copies about Once people start breeding with inferior or impure birds the autosexing starts to go to pot of course! sandyhas3chucks
started another thread with photos if anyone wants to be guessing the sexes of my cross breeds However unsure how "pure" my Cream Legbar is but here she is now age 31 weeks. Comb and wattles about 3 weeks old ish and just started to crouch.
Redwing
Lovely healthy looking hen Sandy but not really correct. Doesnt stop it being a super hen though and a great pet This does demonstrate the differences between incorrect and correct colouring https://sites.google.com/site/creamlegbarsonline/gallery
sandyhas3chucks
Thanks, I think she is lovely and as long as she does not lay 350 + eggs per year Then that is just fine, that was my main objective.. (and not getting a boy!) not showing her, shes a pet. I am sure like with dog breeds you guys can spot the differences a mile off, maybe it ticks off breeders of pure stock . will post my Wellsummer soon see what you think, She IS a stunner!!! Redwing
True Cream Legbar die hards are very passionate about the colour! I dont think having these birds as pets is a problem at all, its people breeding from them that I dont like
good_egg
Not convinced my baby quite cuts the true salmon colour, but she's so cute had to post a pic (worrying proud chicken mum tendencies!)
