mimi5
Hi all, Just had to share......I made a site for my cube for the rest of the winter! Lawn getting trashed and boggy!! Thanks Dogmother for all your advice!! So this morning dismantled the old wooden coop (unused for awhile now) with hubby's help and took it to the dump! Then put down more shingle to enlarge the site, then maneuver the cube....easier said than done!!!Next fill up the cube run with 4,80L bags of wood chip! Lovely!! The pekins reaction .... "your not expecting us to go in there are you?????" "Woo-ha that looks way scarey" So, then me chasing said pekins round the garden trying to get them in the warm and dry while the rain is getting heavier!!!! So there in, but not impressed as you can see by their faces in the photos!! So what do you think? The wood chip is a biy chunkier than I thought, but I had a devil of a job getting some locally! (Also need advice re-wood chip cleaning /maintenance please as used to poo picking on the lawn!!)
zakjon-98
Looks great I just shovel out the wood chip and replace it when it looks like it needs doing. Your cockerel is lovely
chestnutmare
Oo lovely lovely. I do hope my wood chip looks as good as yours when I get it delivered. I'm on B&Q's softwood at the moment but hardwood chips have been ordered. I love your pekins. I too shovel old and replace with new as and when needed and also use Stalosan or BioDri. mimi5
Looks great I just shovel out the wood chip and replace it when it looks like it needs doing. Your cockerel is lovely Thanks! Mr Monty is a georgous millefleur, he was especially spooked by the wood chip, me in hot persuit!!! But I do love him I have the nettex ground sanitizer powder, will that be ok to sprinkle? Would you use it once a week? Also if there are obvious poos, should I still poo pick? I'll sleep well tonight, doing all that took all morning!! I hope they're happier tomorrow as they didn't seem to want to move around on it!!
The Dogmother
Glad to see that you got it done Mimi5, it looks good and I bet your lawn will recover when it starts growing in the warmer weather. I use either Ground Sanitising Powder or BioDry weekly; just sprinkle it in the run and it will keep bacteria and niffs down.
daxigirl
Bless them, they'll get used to it. Love your boy, very handsome. Where and what type of wood bits is that you've used? Looks nice compared to the stuff I got last time (although all the rain and mud isn't helping any). Also have you got shingle under the bark? Just wondering if it would make any difference to my run. The Dogmother
Do be careful of shingle chaps; it's notoriously difficult to get clean, you are better off sticking to litter which you can muck out and replace.
Hayleybug
Hi Mimi, that looks great! ive got hardwood chips in the run and i poo pick daily, and them im going to rake it over once a week with liberal sprinklings of stalosan. then when it gets to a certain point i will replace the whole lot but most people on here have said that it will last a good few months without needing to be changed! i need another bag of it though really as one was nowhere near enough. where did you get yours from? Hi Hayleybug! Hope you & yours girls settling in to nice routine now!!?? Yes all the good poos I picked up today, old habits die hard!! Also think it might help the longivity of the wood chip. After much searching and phone calls I got my wood chip from "Madingley mulch"near cambridge, £8.35p per 80L bag .Collected it myself. But I had looked in to getting some from "Flytes so Fancy" online, but of course there is a delivery charge and for the amount I needed it would have cost £25. Be intresting to see how long the wood chip lasts. They were very quiet the pekins when I came to let them out this morning (and it was later than usual....) but they were still very "Oooo that scarey stuff's still there!" Took them ages to come down!! SO gald I did manage to do the big swop over and get it all done! I am very pleased with the result it is lovely and dry in their run (especially as we had terrible gusty winds and rain all last night!!!) daxigirl, I had gravel (well 10m gravel from homebase) in place from where the old wooden coop had been. Just thought to make the ground surface/level all the same. Also thought it might help the wood chip last longer? But the run is completely covered so it should all be dry. Will let you know how it goes!

I love their little bustles It is funny isn't it how chickens just hate change and they seem particularly wary of any new feeling on their feet
mullethunter
Returning to an old post. Mimi5 I like the look of your set up (and your lovely little girls obviously!) - do you still have it like that and how are you getting on with it? How does it go through wet winters?
