Hit & run cat

Recommended Posts

Driving home from town today I came across a man who had stopped to 'rescue' an injured cat in the middle of the road. I was horrified to then see him toss it into the nearest hedge  So I retrieved it & took it to the vets. It has no microchip & I haven't been able to locate the owners as yet (it is a large rural area here!)

The vet has said that it is my decision what to do with the cat; so far, they think it has a broken front leg, possible pelvic injury & funny noises in the lungs. The trouble is that I am as poor as a church mouse but would foot the bill if necessary. Is there any charitable help that you Omleteers know of that could help? The vets say that the RSPCA can only offer £60 which won't cover the x-rays... :(

What a sad story :( TBH before getting too involved I would find out what the prognosis is for the cat both now, and if he/she has the treatments/operations. I don't know how these things are sorted out really, but it can't be your responsibility to have to make all the tough decisions just because you did the right thing in taking the poor creature in. I would have thought the vets would keep the animal, at least overnight, because I would have thought that an owner might not notice an animal's absence for a while, and then when they do they would get in touch with their vet and hopefully other practices as well.

You might find that the PDSA, cat charities or rescues might be able to help you/give advice, perhaps give one a call?

Poor cat :( and wicked driver  I would be inclined to contact PDSA, RSPCA and Cats Protection and Blue Cross and see what they suggest. I think it is unfair of the vet to put all the onus on you.

Just done a quick bit of research and Blue Cross seem to be your best bet. I do hope there is a positive outcome for this cat.

Any news about the poor cat?

I'm disgusted at the driver, as was said wicked person!

I am also sad that he vet has put the onus onto you, Snowberry, to decide what to do. I always thought that vets were obliged to treat an animal or put it down when it is in a bad condition.

I know that when we visited our vets for the first time, almost 12 yaers ago, with our rescued lurcher whom I was convinced had parvo virus, and we weren't registered with them. Yet they treated her (OK we had the money to pay for it and as it happened she did have parvo) and told us that they were obliged to treat any sick or injured animal that was taken to them. I know that things may have changed since then. It's still a horrible position that you have been put in.

A few years back, we picked up a cat on the side of the road that had been left for dead :(

She was in a terrible state and had a huge gaping wound in the top of her head. We took her to the vets, who checked her over & rang the rspca to see if the would cover the cost of treatment. It must have been expensive because she had to have numerous dental extractions amongst other things. Her palate was also split in half from a previous accident

We put posters up in the area that we found her but no one came forwards to claim her. She was a mature girl with poor kidney function, so worried that "Ooops, word censored!"ody would want to take her on, we re-homed her. We definitely wouldn't have been able to afford her medical bill if the rspca hadn't stepped in though. Lucy was a lovely, affectionate cat, who had a wonky eye, dribbled a lot and mothered the rest of our tribe. We had her for about six years and I still miss her.

I hope that the vets you took her to managed to find someone to cover the costs for the poor cat you found. Maybe funds are tighter these days though...

Makes my blood boil to think that someone could have just tossed her into the hedge

Makes me mad too

I live in a quiet side road where there are lots of pet cats and children playing in the street, we still get yoofs speeding down the road and cats killed (luckily it's' not children). In the last year I, or a neighbour have picked up 3 dead cats, which were much loved pets. Sometimes we recognise them and can go and knock on a door, other times we take them to the vet where they hang onto the body for a couple of weeks in case someone comes forward before cremating it.

How horrible :-(

we saw a cat hit by a driver who didnt stop, I had just had surgery on my ankle but I managed to hobble over to it, unforteantly the cat didnt make it he was a gorgeous fellow too, another driver stopped to slow traffic down so I could move it to somewhere more respectable and where it wouldnt be hit again then I found his family. It was horrible to have to knock on their door. It was a country road so I assume the driver who hit the cat must have thougt it was a rabbit or something... but for the driver who you saw to do what they did is awful, why cant people just do the right thing nowadays !
