TBH whilst I struggle with the African views on homosexuality  I was hoping for an African Pope this time and a younger pope. The Catholic church desperately needs someone untainted by the many scandals who can go in and reform and confess where they have done wrong in the past and ask victims for their forgiveness. It's a curious thing a religion that puts so much emphasis on confession and forgiveness will not do that itself :?

I'd never heard of this guy so no idea what his views are but I suspect as with every other pope there has been before, issues and concerns that affect me as a Catholic mother and working woman won't even register :(

I do agree that it would have been a huge step forward to have an African Pope - and prefferably a much younger one. I don't generally find that men in their mid to late 70s are very up to date with early 21st cent. attitudes and opinions!

It seems to me that the Pope is merely a figurehead and not actually expected to express his own opinions - elected to be a 'safe bet'? It will be interesting to see what happens with Francis I.

From the BBC new site:

The Vatican's account of his first hours in the top job on Thursday also emphasised Pope Francis's humility, describing how he shunned a special car and security detail provided to take him to the Vatican, travelling instead on a bus with the other cardinals.

Following his first outing as pope to the Rome basilica on Thursday, Francis went back to the clergy house in a city centre side street where he had been staying ahead of the conclave that elected him on Wednesday.

"He packed his bags and then he went to pay the bill for his room so as to set a good example," said Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi.

He also broke tradition by remaining standing to receive cardinals' acts of homage after his election, instead of sitting in the papal throne, Father Lombardi said.

:)
