patsylabrador
I've been fascinated by the election of this Pope. I felt quite excited when the white smoke came out. I wonder who it is. Apparently it was quite quick because Easter is soon.
Charlottechicken
Blimey! That was quick, I thought they would be voting for days yet. Wonder what his Papal name will be?
bluekarin
Just had a look at the choices. Not sure who I would vote for to be honest
Charlottechicken
New pope is 76 year old Argentinian Jorge Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires. He will be known as Pope Francis I.
Willow
TBH whilst I struggle with the African views on homosexuality I was hoping for an African Pope this time and a younger pope. The Catholic church desperately needs someone untainted by the many scandals who can go in and reform and confess where they have done wrong in the past and ask victims for their forgiveness. It's a curious thing a religion that puts so much emphasis on confession and forgiveness will not do that itself I'd never heard of this guy so no idea what his views are but I suspect as with every other pope there has been before, issues and concerns that affect me as a Catholic mother and working woman won't even register Edited March 13, 2013 by Guest
Old Speckled Hen
As a Catholic mother of a gay daughter and an ex working woman I must agree with you. same old same old.....nothing changes and never will.

Grandmashazzie
Yes it would be nice to see someone younger but by all accounts he seems a very grounded gentleman, very humble so hopefully he can reach out to people.
soapdragon
I do agree that it would have been a huge step forward to have an African Pope - and prefferably a much younger one. I don't generally find that men in their mid to late 70s are very up to date with early 21st cent. attitudes and opinions! It seems to me that the Pope is merely a figurehead and not actually expected to express his own opinions - elected to be a 'safe bet'? It will be interesting to see what happens with Francis I. craftyhunnypie
charlottechicken - I'm sorry but I read your post as I wonder what his 'paypal' name will be. Oh & how do they make the different coloured smoke? Is it the pope having a quick fag inside the vatican? Emma.x
Geoid
The smoke is made by burning ballot papers, smoke is usually black. To make white smoke, they add zinc or phosphorus, which attract water whilst burning, forming white smoke.
craftyhunnypie
Fascinating! Thanks for that. Now do you know how to make purple or pink smoke? I rather fancy that from my chimney. (sorry). Emma.x
snowberry
From the BBC new site: The Vatican's account of his first hours in the top job on Thursday also emphasised Pope Francis's humility, describing how he shunned a special car and security detail provided to take him to the Vatican, travelling instead on a bus with the other cardinals. Following his first outing as pope to the Rome basilica on Thursday, Francis went back to the clergy house in a city centre side street where he had been staying ahead of the conclave that elected him on Wednesday. "He packed his bags and then he went to pay the bill for his room so as to set a good example," said Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi. He also broke tradition by remaining standing to receive cardinals' acts of homage after his election, instead of sitting in the papal throne, Father Lombardi said.
