Love this site

Recommended Posts

I just want to say how much I enjoy reading all the different posts on here and what I enjoy the most is viewing all the pictures of your chickens. I am not longer able to have chickens here in Dodge City, Kansas. I was hoping my daughter would be able to purchase a home in the country but that fell through. I just sold my go and that was difficult to see it being taken off. I have read how you all came together for the BBQ and all the other things you do together. I just want you all to know that I send you all warm thoughts and blessings. If I am ever able to have chickens again I will be getting a purple cube. One never knows what is around the corner.

Oh thats lovely - and love to you too. Sorry you're temporarily without chucks. I am pleased to see more of the American gals coming onto Uk site - why is the USA site so quiet? I know some of the Brits go onto the USA site for a nose. All the Americans I have ever met are real chatterboxes like us lot. I think I will stray onto the other site stir things up a bit. Ali x

Just checked - July was last post on US site. Amazing.

and that was me that posted in July - I guess I chatter too much! Do not know the reason they do not get on. Chicken keeping here in the States is not as wide spread as it is in the UK, we are a little behind the times if you asked me. There is a small town about an hour from here that has just allowed chicken keeping. There are not many towns in Kansas that do allow it. When I moved here, living with my daughter, I thought for sure that an old west town such as Dodge City would welcome chicken keeping, but they don't. I too watch the USA site to try and keep communication going with them.

The board is a little bit difficult to find. I think most Americans who wind up here are having a problem with customer service. Once it's resolved, they go away. I read that there was once a US-only board and it was fairly active, but the original users were miffed when Omlet decided to combine it with the UK board. I lurk here, but things can be very British at times so I can't really contribute to threads about the weather and products can be a bit different! For instance, it's fairly standard to dust your chickens with Sevin dust (carbaryl) in the US if they have lice or mites, but it's illegal in the UK.

I hope someone fights the chicken restrictions in your town! They used to be forbidden in the NW Florida county where I live, but I joined a group who fought to change the code. After some initial opposition, we made it to the Planning Board. As luck would have it, the vice chair of the board was an illegal chicken owner. Although he had over 2 acres, it was zoned residential. He firmly sided with us and our opponents backed down! :D

In our case, our main opponents were the animal control department staff. From what I've read, that is often the case. The more animals people are allowed to keep, the more risk there is for complaints that they will have to investigate. A few of them were convinced that people would be irresponsible and neglect or abandon their chickens, especially roosters, and they would have to come out and deal with the problem. I guess doing their job, they do get a jaded view of animal owners. Ironically, chicken ownership was allowed in the city limits, but there were a lot of restrictions. Those restrictions were loosened last year and many county residents assumed that our rules were the same or less restrictive which wasn't the case- until now! :)

As to the weather, I hate to admit that it is still hot here when you are all complaining about the cold. I went for a swim yesterday! It has been a horribly wet summer, though. We had a couple of years of drought a while back, but the last couple of years have certainly gotten the water table back up!
